Clive Trevelyan

Lord Clive Trevelyan

Clive Trevelyan is the current Lord of House Trevelyan, a house of Neverwintian nobles whose holdings since ancient times have been concentrated in the region known as 'Hotefeld'.

Description

Clive is a man of angular features with a muscular build, he has green eyes, light brown hair and wears a short beard.

Personal History

Clive was born to Calder Trevelyan, a middling lord who held protectorship over the ancient lordship of Hotefeld, and to his wife Laetitia who perished giving birth to Clive while travelling on the road back from the city of Neverwinter.   The young lord would often practice his techniques in the crop fields surrounding his father's country estate, it was on one such occasion that he encountered Erin Garrideb, a farmer's daughter who held aspirations of becoming a knight, the two became fast friends and frequent sparring partners. Unfortunately however, the young girl's life would be forever changed when a growing cult of demon-worshippers from one of the neighbouring villages chose her father's farm as the site of their latest summoning; Erin was spared when lord Trevelyan's militia interrupted the ritual with the demon-worshippers fleeing and going to ground in the numerous hamlets and villages nearby. She then came to live under the Trevelyans' roof at Clive's insistence to abandon his title if she could not, under the Trevelyans' care the two young warriors' sparring soon became more intimate.   Trevelyan would later found a knightly order along with Garrideb, Trevelyan dubbed the order 'The Trevelyan Chevaliers', sworn to defend the helpless and to oppose demon-worship wherever it was found. While this force was at first seen only as an excuse for the rich merchants and nobles' sons and daughters to drink and boast of imaginary victories (which predominantly it was), it eventually became respected by the common-folk and the nobility alike for securing the lord Trevelyan's borders, clearing more arable land of monsters to allow for greater production of food & goods, which did not go unnoticed by the merchantmen whose pockets were lined by the good deeds of the lordling's 'Chevaliers', and the ousting of a great many demon-worshippers from both the local townships and the surrounding wilderness.   Trevelyan disappeared in the wake of rumours that the young lord was in fact the bastard child of a Neverwintian man, Trevelyan travelled north along with Garrideb and 30 of his men, ostensibly to meet an information broker, the group were found dead some weeks after their departure. After months of absence Trevelyan returned, and upon announcing himself to the townsfolk of the nearest hamlet he was ridiculed as a liar and imposter. Trevelyan lands were divided up among the other nobles and the house Trevelyan was no more...

Events of the Dragon Heist

In the first month since his return, Trevelyan passed himself off as a mercenary; taking on the moniker 'Crest' to protect his identity, knowing full-well that whoever chose to destroy him and his family would not stand idle upon hearing that he still lived. Trevelyan made for the city of Waterdeep; and eventually found himself under the information broker Grymor's employ, at the broker's promise to lay bare the secrets of how Trevelyan was betrayed in return for first his service and then his hard-won coin... Trevelyan worked under Grymor for some months, during which time he became acquianted with his future fiancé 'Veil of Starlight' and Osver Osvarian, both of whom were associates for Trevelyan in his time under Grymor.

The Golden Lion Company

Eventually they would become entangled with a motley crew of adventurers leading them to the estate of Rendon Wulff, where Trevelyan finally secured proof of Wulff's guilt in the destruction of his family. Trevelyan kept this information to himself for some time, still hesistant to reveal his nobility for fear of reprisals against himself and the party if Wulff caught wind of his survival. Trevelyan remained with the party during the formative months of their establishment as a mercenary guild and is considered a founding member of The Golden Lion Company despite technically never having taken a formal position within the organisation. Trevelyan worked with the Lions during their first adventures including their quest for a missing Nimblewright prior to which they encountered Martem a young lad, whose parents it seemed had been killed in an explosion that occured right on the company's doorstep and threw them into the search for who was responsible, eventually leading them to the Nimblewright and beginning their quest to find 'The Stone of Golorr'. Trevelyan took a shine to the boy, as did Veil of Starlight, and the two took it upon themselves to see the boy taken care of and with the help of the party sought out any relatives the boy might have, however, it seemed the boy was indeed alone in the world, during this time Trevelyan and Veil grew closer and it was plain for all to see that there were stirrings between the two.     Search for The Stone of Golorr   As their adventure unfolded the group found themselves in increasing danger; it was on one evening when Trevelyan, Teas, and Osver having entered the City of The Dead, Waterdeep's main cemetery, entered the Garloth family mausoleum where a new contact of theirs; Grinda Garloth, claimed she had stashed the Stone of Golorr, only for the trio to find the mausoleum raided and the reliquary empty save for a suspicious key. As they left they were set upon by members of Xanathar's Thieves Guild who very nearly took the three's lives as they narrowly escaped and returned to the docks only to be followed by Xanathar's flunkies. Realising they were surrounded and with himself and Teas near death Trevelyan retrieved a paper bird which they had found some weeks ago from his pack and hastily penned a note proclaiming his survival and requesting the aid of Waterdeep's Griffon Cavalry, Trevelyan sealed the message with wax and using his family signet ring made an indentation in the wax as proof of his claim. The party were narrowly saved from the Xanathars' blades by the Griffon Cavalry, and were taken to the cavalry's garrison where their wounds were tended, and after a lengthy interrogation by the cavalry's commander to confirm Trevelyan's identity the party were permitted to leave.   The party returned to Trollskull Manor and reflected on recent events, with a number of them drinking into the small hours. Trevelyan awoke the next morning having spent the night with Veil and the two proceeded with an awkward conversation, with Trevelyan admitting that he had not intended for things to go this way, and had hoped to make his sentiments known more formally. The two discussed their sentiments and agreed to formally begin a relationship, however, considering the dangers they faced, they decided to keep things subdued for now.   During their adventure they were joined by Valor of House Belabranta, with whom Trevelyan became fast friends and Anya Silverwood, a family friend of Trevelyan whose ties would be severely tested when it was revealed that she was in fact a Dhampyr, a form of Vampire-spawn, and a concept Trevelyan struggled to reconcile, considering his regard for his friend and his condemnation of such a creature. Relations were icy between them for a short time until the two spoke and Anya revealed the circumstances of her birth and her drive to resist baser instincts, the two reconciled, but things would remain somewhat tenuous for a time.   The party followed up on their last remaining lead in the key and after striking a deal with a knowledgeable locksmith to pave their way to join the Harpers, bided their time until the locksmith came through. With the lockspmith's information they found their way to an abandoned windmill outside of the city, which they learned upon entry had become a den of squatters, vagabonds, and most commonly drudanae addicts. While searching the property the party conversed with a pair of men who seemed to have enough of their wits about them to make conversation, while they were being questioned, Osver drew his blade and slew one of the men in cold blood before any of the party could stop him. The party's other members were shocked by Osver's actions and had him bury the man with respect before making him promise to tend the grave for the rest of his days, Osver's actions had been increasingly kleptomaniacal and suspicious in the recent days and this was simply another in a long list of questionable actions from the Halfling. Lirchon was approached by a man with a gold tooth, who questioned Lirchon, the man had an unsettling manner which Lirchon simply could not place.   The party were split on Osver's action in recent days, but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt for the time-being.

The Pink Flumph

The party were tipped off to a potential location for the Stone of Golorr and travelled to Sewage basement 92A where they eventually found the stone after dispatching some suspicious characters who seemed to be dabbling in dark rituals. It was discovered that the stone was in fact an Aboleth, who had been transformed and trapped in this form. After some time questioning the entity the party were led to the theatre known as 'The Pink Flumph', where it was believed the vault containing the treasure hoard stashed by Dagult Neverember was to be found. The party cased the area by attending a performance, with Lirchon and Osver posing as performers which ended with the tail end of the performance becoming derailed by an over-acting Lirchon and Osver accidentally destroying the production's most expensive costume, a full-size cloth representation of a Lamia. After the performance the party encountered a suspicious Tabaxi with a gold tooth who introduced himself as Quill, he claimed to be employed by House Cassalanter. There was an otherworldly feeling about the man which the party could not place.   The party returned to the Pink Flumph in the evening and attempted entry to a hidden passage in the establishment's dressing room, and after descending found the area below empty. Upon ascending the party made their way out onto the stage to leave but were then encountered again by Quill who was waiting in the theatre, who then transformed, revealing himself to be an Arcanaloth and introduced himself as Esigius. Esigius revealed that Osver had been working in his employ for some time and confirmed that a number of the Halfling's actions were done at his command. Esigius made off with the stone and Osver, leaving the remainder of the party to do battle with his minions; a group of devils.   The party narrowly escaped their encounter with Esigius's minions and returned to the manor. Searching Osver's rooms they located a letter which seemed to confirm Esigius' claims.

House Cassalanter

Having been betrayed by their erstwhile ally Osver Osvarian, who had struck a deal with House Cassalanter in secret, the group were left hopelessly outmanned for an attack of retribution against House Cassalanter, made even more dire when it was discovered that one of their number had been captured by the Cassalanters when trying to reconnoiter the estate, a fact which nearly drove Trevelyan to run to his death were it not for the words of Lirchon encouraging him to see reason. After trying a number of their potential allies the Golden Lions entreated with Bregan D'aerthe and Jarlaxle Baenre to aid them in return for half of the expected bounty, which Jarlaxle accepted, though it was eventually made plain that he had no intention of claiming the bounty and instead intented to return it to the city of Waterdeep.   The party researched what they could about their foes and the mysterious Esigius, learning the true power behind the creature they planned to challenge and that the Cassalanters had indeed raided the Vault of Dragons beneath the Pink Flumph as part of their contract with devils, and now were in possession of the gold Neverember had stolen and hidden. Within a matter of days the group were ready to assault House Cassalanter, and Trevelyan took the time to speak with Embric and Avi, friends of the company and the owners of a blacksmithy near the company headquarters whom he and Veil had become friendly with and had agreed to watch Martem on occasion. Trevelyan asked them to take care of Martem if the worst should happen and neither he nor Veil survived the attack on the Cassalanters, a notion to which they begrudgingly agreed, however, urged Trevelyan to not make the boy an orphan again. Trevelyan returned to the company headquarters and spoke with Martem, telling him that even if the worst should happen he would be looked after, he shared a poignant moment with Martem and embraced him as his son before joining the others and preparing the attack.   Upon entering the Cassalanter estate's main house and locating Veil, who had been enthralled by dint of some magic, Trevelyan attempted to rouse her out of her entralled state, and succeeded albeit briefly, but long enough for them to understad what had happened. After fighting their way through the rest of the estate they managed to clear their friend's mind and with Bregan D'aerthe's help, breached the estate's hidden dungeon.   Upon descending the party were met with dozens of damned souls toiling away as slaves and eventual sacrifices it would seem to satisfy the Cassalanters' debt to the devils. During their descent they encountered Osver, imprisoned below until he was wanted. The group freed Osver and located his contract which by its wording was predictably vague and open to interpretation to Esigius' benefit, despite their misgivings they agreed to allow Osver to rejoin them and hopefully free himself from Esigius' contract. Making their way through the bowels of the Cassalanters' dungeon they eventually located Lord Cassalanter who engaged them in combat, and when the tide of the fight looked as though he would lose, Lord Cassalanter attempted to escape through the use of an invisibility spell, however, he was quickly thwarted by a lucky crossbow bolt to the chest, fired by Trevelyan. The party proceeded further and were encountered again by Esigius who invited them to drink with him; knowing the creature's power the party reluctantly followed and were pulled through a portal to Esigius' stronghold in the Hells. Esigius revealed that he had in fact manipulated events to his own ends, goading the party into slaying the Cassalanters and thus freeing him from the contract he had made with them, as a token of his appreciation Esigius burned Osver's contract, seemingly freeing Osver from his clutches. Esigius allowed the party to leave, with Trevelyan making it clear that he hoped never to cross the creature's path again, a fact that entertained the Arcanaloth to no end...   Upon leaving the estate the party were met by Open Lord Laeral Silverhand, who congratulated them and in thanks for recovering the city's stolen gold rewarded the party with a hefty portion of the recovered gold. Trevelyan approached Silverhand and queried her on events regarding his family and their lands, she confirmed that rumours of his father's death were indeed true, and House Wulff had aggressively been fighting the other lords of the northern territories to take House Trevelyan's lands. Trevelyan confirmed he had the evidence to prove their guilt, to which Silverhand agreed to vouch for his claims among the Lords' Assembly.   This still left the party with the conundrum of what to do with Osver. His crimes would easily have seen him hang without so much as a second thought, Trevelyan was notably hard on Osver, and moved to turn him over to the city along with the evidence they had gathered, stating that a sympathetic court would see his actions mostly as poor judgement and spare his life in return for a cell. The party debated long and eventually determined to have Osver admitted to a monastery in Berdusk, where he might come to learn restraint, and more importantly come to feel contrition for his actions.

Return to The North

Following resolution of their business in Waterdeep, Trevelyan decided that it was time to bid farewell to the fledgling Golden Lion Company and travel north with his adoptive son, in the hopes of reclaiming his home. The group were saddened to see Trevelyan leave, as many had determined to remain either with the company or at least remain in the city, including Veil of Starlight who had taken a formal leadership position within the company. Trevelyan commissioned a ship to carry himself and Martem to Neverwinter and bade his farewells as did Martem, but not before telling Veil that while he would never seek to control her, when she was ready he would be waiting, with that Trevelyan departed leaving Veil with his family signet ring as a promise, and engagement ring.   After reaching Neverwinter, Trevelyan submitted evidence proving Wulff's guilt to the Lords Assembly, cementing Wulff's disgrace, and reclaiming his own title.   In the time since, with their deeds exposed, helped in no small part by the Open Lord of Waterdeep, Laeral Silverhand, the Wulffs' fled with their noble status stripped and with Rendon disappearing entirely. Rendon's son and heir, Harland, on the other hand, rallied the house's troops and marched on Hotefeld, claiming it from under the Lords Alliance's nose.

History

Formerly friends through their families, however, Harland always harbored a deep resentment towards Clive and the Trevelyans, even serving as a member of House Trevelyan's Chevaliers only to spy for his father. With Harland conquering Hotefeld and being complicit in the murder of Clive's father, their relationship is now irreconcilable.
