The Naggomath Newt

A peculiar, bright red newt lives in the grasslands around the Hollow Hills of Beldam. The newt has markings on its body that resemble a human skull. This newt emits a toxic sweat that can cause hallucinations and, according to the Witches of Altamar, reveal prophecies and omens. The newt is considered protected by the Most Illuminated Church and commonly held as a "protected species." This is largely in part to the belief that some of the Witches of Altamar saw visions that offended and contradicted commonly believed doctrine or omens held by the church.   The newt is difficult to capture as handling it directly causes the newt's toxin to enter the body, but it can also release a spray when panicked that can easily enter the body through the mouth, nose, or eyes. The Witches of Altamar use a painstaking process of smoking the newt into complacency by burning the Holly-yarrow bloom. Once the newt has ingested enough smoke, and has not already fled, the creature is scooped up by a long handled spoon and held in a box with slots carved throughout.   The newt is fed hallucinogenic herbs and the box holding them is spun periodically in a violent manner. This is meant to frighten and aggrivate the newt until it releases large sprays of the its toxic sweat. The sweat is collected in a loosely woven cloth wrapped around the box, which is then slowly distilled into a liquid.   The liquid, called "Dreaming Yellow Dreams," is kept for the Witches rituals. A watered-down version of the liquid is also sold illegally as a narcotic. This narcotic is called "Yellow" and is sold throughout Beldam, but is most readily available in the neighborhoods of Browning. The sale of "Yellow" has become one of the most lucrative illegal businesses in Browning, increasing the coastal towns reputation as a "drug-addled port."
