Dimensionally Blurry

A character that consumes a Draught of Transference (made from the venom of the Giant Warp Spider), engages in time-travel, or is otherwise able to traverse dimensional rifts or passages by means of drug or medicine, does so in a state of incoporealness to the material world. Upon return to the material plane, the character must succeed on a Constitution saving throw or become "Dimensionally Blurry." When affected by this condition several effects occur:   1. The character must succeed on a Constitution saving throw each round or they are blurry and cannot take any action that requires physical interaction with the material plane.   2. Each turn or every 1 action of movement, a character must roll 1 d4 and is randomly moved 10 ft from it's current location. A character that is blurry can be moved into any space in the material world regardless of walls or barriers.   3. The character can communicate with other characters but their voice appears distant and echoing. If the affected character is more than 15ft away, other characters must succeed on an Intelligence check to successfully hear the communication.   4. The character appears to other characters as blurry and phasing in and out of vision.   5. Every 3 rounds the character is affected, they must roll 1 d4 to determine how many 15 minute increments they are sent forward or backward in time. The direction of time displacement is determined as forward (odd) or backwards (even) by the resulting roll.

Transmission & Vectors

Via interdimensional travel by a drug or medicinal draught.

Causes

A character becomes temporarily trapped between two dimensions or planes due to an unsuccessful or incomplete attempt to return to the material plane or point of origin in space-time.

Symptoms

Blurred appearance and seems to randomly disappear from view. Random and spontaneous teleportation. Character is unaffected by spells, magic, or magical items and cannot use such methods.

Treatment

The condition can be removed on a successful intelligence check, done at a disadvantage, against a DC of 13, at the beginning of each turn.

Prognosis

A character can become trapped by materializing in an inaccessible space or location. While dimensionally blurry, the character loses life at the rate of 2 d4 hit points each round.

Sequela

A character can become frightened during this condition.

Affected Groups

Any creature that consumes the venom of the Giant Warp Spider as a drug/medicine or otherwise travels inter-dimensionally outside of their own innate ability.

Prevention

Some magical items provide a kind of inter-dimensional weight, tying the user to their plane of origin.

Epidemiology

Inter-dimensional travel via medicine or drug.

History

The first recorded case was noted by Pliney the Scientist in his treatise "The Inter-dimensional Phasing of the Achrid Spider Bird." Pliney observed that the large, vulture-like birds exhibited symptoms of this condition after feasting on the Giant Warp Spiders of the "Grief-Stricken Forest." Pliney experimented himself on the venom of the Giant Warp Spiders and recorded travelling to bizarre and terrifying realms, often being stuck between realms. He also notes that on one occasion, he found himself staring at the same cave mouth he had been visiting nearly three hours ago. He took no note of anything beyond that until he realized that his own foot prints which should have been leading to the cave were now missing. He quickly gauged the position of the sun and realized the sun had moved further back toward the east, approximately three hours back.

Cultural Reception

Phasing is a frightening thing for others to experience and those affected are often counted as ghosts.
