Admiral

Admiral is the rank of the commanding officer of the Standing Fleet of the Earth Colonial Navy. It is the second highest rank in the entire ECN, just below the Admirals of the Fleet from Earth Space Command. For most members of the ECN, however, the Admiral is the highest ranking officer they could ever meet. This is because the Admirals of the Fleet spend most of their time in the ECN headquarters on Earth. The Admiral can be sometimes seen as the de facto leader of the ECN. The fact that the rapid response fleets and system patrol fleets are commanded by admirals lower in the chain of command makes it even easier to perceive it that way.

Requirements

To get the rank of the Admiral, an officer must distinguish themselves as a commander of a starship and serve for at least two years as the commanding officer of a rapid response fleet or a system patrol fleet. Only then, they can be taken into consideration for the promotion. Also, it can only happen when the current occupant of the position retires, dies or is promoted to Admiral of the Fleet.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

There are very few ways to remove the Admiral from their post. Most of the time they serve until retirement. In other cases, the Earth Space Command can remove the Admiral if they deem that he is not skilled enough to deal with a certain situation. However, such cases happen very rarely. The other way of removing the Admiral from their post is to get them court martialed, something that has never happened. Even if some people felt that a certain Admiral did something wrong, they were too scared to report it. Getting the second highest officer in the ECN court martialed would probably destroy that officer's chances of any promotion.
