The Gaards
In a universe much like ours, there were living beings peppered across galaxies, each struggling to survive. Eventually the most powerful of these beings would reach a peak of consciousness and would seek out the secrets of their existence. In time, they all learned the same truth- they were the creations of Gods. Gods were the primordial aspects of the universe, conscious but quiet- allowing the physical to take meaning. With the newfound connection to these Gods, mortals began building their empires and civilizations in the cosmos. In their advancement and hubris, they eventually forgot the Gods. Seeking further expansion, they attempted inter-dimensional travel and unleashed Ravenous Cosmic Beings called Galla onto their universe. The Gods sealed both themselves and The Galla in a new dimension called The Astral Steppe, but left some of their power with Mortals so they could fend for themselves.
The Mortals loyal to the Gods are presided over by the Arch-Diocese, and are granted resources through spiritual means. Disloyal Mortals called Heretics pay tribute to the Galla, and rely on tech. Mortals in the Gaards have access to the spiritual power of Belief- if enough Mortals come together for a specific purpose and pray, a God will allow a miracle to happen. Mortals have access to this ability once monthly. It is quite difficult to master, as a single unfocused being in the Mass can disrupt it. Thus it is used mainly for simple Miracles like food, and water.
But there are those gifted by the Gods with power beyond that of other Mortals. Halos: guardians in service to the Arch-Diocese and Mortal life. They can access complicated miracles and provide protection from dark forces in the universe. The Galla have imbued some Mortals with power as well and these beings are called Spurious and created The Heretics.
This connection to the Gods is somewhat symbiotic- The Gods are empowered by Mortal belief, and Mortals are kept confortable by the God's miracles. The Galla are connected to negative vibrations that are found in every universe called Hurtz. When mortals experience negative vibrations, they empower the Galla. The Arch-Diocese is a government resolved to pay respect to the Gods by strict rules of worship, to end the war.
Though the wars between The Arch-Diocese and Heretics have been over for centuries, the number of Halos being born has been steadily rising- suggesting a new threat. A new generation of Halos must protect the Universe or damn the Mortals and Gods alike.
