The Things They Forget

The Future is Now is a sci-fi memepunk setting where humanity's eradicator plagiarized the internet, claimed humanity's only remnants as their own and created a universe full of humanaboos. Let's see what legacy the humans have left behind shall we?

We don't choose who we forget, only who we remember

In her dingy space apartment Jill synthesizes some space popcorn, eyeing the timer while calling out into the living room, "Hey babe could you turn on channel 76ADF1?"

The Sentient hovers their hand over the space remote, "Sure thing" and the holoscreen changes with the words, "On air in 5 minute".   In a film studio lights shine on a standard interviewer droid as it's pseudo-personality module comes online, "Welcome back I'm here with Worldbuilder Gūguru hon'yaku-mei-sama from the Orthodoxy of the Keikoku Otaku Itai Doctrine (K.O.I) (WIP), creator of the hit series Fungeons and Dragons. For those of you tuning in Mei-sama is ending his show, so before it goes off air why don't you tell us how it all started?"

Mei-sama swam around in his KOIfish bowl which sat upon the neck of a slim well dressed humanoid power suit, "Well like most K.O.I I believe the best worlds are the ones that feel real and alive. So 4000 years ago I seeded a tech level 0 fantasy planet with Space Elves (WIP) and Dwarf Enterprises (WIP) due to their shared fungal biology. Aside from some minor modifications under the guise of divine intervention, I actually had a very hands-off approach and let the world's history evolve naturally. I simply directed hidden camera drones to track those individuals who would become the main cast of the series."

Lights on the droid's face plate form a jovial expression, "Well you certainly have a talent for picking the cast Mei-sama. Now my favorite moment was in season 8, the battle of the 7 rulers where it was revealed the rulers were dragons the entire time. I'm sure the audience would agree no one saw that coming." It places a hand on a metallic earpiece momentarily, "Now the viewers want to know what your favorite moments from Fungeons and Dragons were. Remembering the fond memories before the planet is abandoned and they get to live as nature intended."

Mei-sama's auto-tie fixes itself, "Excellent question well in a village on the outskirt of Nightlands there was a little girl that had no hatred for Dwarves or Dragons despite where she lived. She saw my world differently."

The Droid shuffles some holo-papers and simulates glancing at them momentarily before turning its attention back to the K.O.I, "I'm sorry I don't have that character in my memory banks."

Mei-sama stopped swimming for a moment, "I'm not surprised. Not many viewers noticed; fewer remembered. She was a background character, when the sun dragon of Lighthome flew by and torched the village of Meadowsfield in season 7," He picked up a glass of water and poured it into his bowl, "She was ashes before she realized what was happening."

The droid sounded puzzled, "Now why that was your favorite moment? Background characters died by the millions in the siege of Fort Meadow. Weren't there impactful deaths from more important characters?"

"To me they were all important people. I remember each and every one of them, they all had lives just as interesting as the main cast. She defied expectations but she lived and died a pure soul in such a dark place, never had the chance to grow bitter with age. Although i'm glad her story ended like that, few character arcs end well" He stopped in his bowl to stared at the stage lights, "the ending is always the most difficult part, most Sentients can't make a good one."

The droid paused for a moment before continuing, "Now with your successful new series are you worried Fungeons and Dragon's won't have a lasting legacy?"

Mei-sama swam close to the edge of it's bowl to look at the droid in it's fake glowing eyes, "No I have the power of god and Anime on my side. When everyone forgets I won't; all it takes is one person to remember."

A space phone rings interrupts as the droid picks it up, "Congratulations lucky viewer, you are live on the air is there something you'd like to ask Mei-sama?"

Jill's voice is heard over the line, "Oh my god babe I'm actually on. Hey Mei-sama I'm Jill and i’m your biggest fan, I love your new series, The Empero's Pendant. Especially when it was revealed the Empero of Anvilfell was actually a banana raptor, what inspired you to make that scene?"

Mei-sama's auto-tie fixed itself, "I guess you’re moving on. Well yes Jill I was inspired by a world I visited which was developed by in the Chapter's Edge cinematic universe."

And after Jill's question was answered the interview went on uneventfully but despite that Jill remembered one thing from the interview, that Mei-sama answered her question; After all it was one of the best moments in her life and one she’d never forget.

Author's Notes

Hey, this article was written for a fun writing challenge prompt from the On The Edge chapter of the World Anvil discord.

I want to know about a place that exists towards the edge of your setting. It may be a place forgotten or forbidden, somewhere sealed away and told of only in tales whispered in the dark corners of taverns or the back alleys of space stations.   Why does it exist on the edge of society? Was it always there, or was it once more central? Is it still inhabited, or totally abandoned, and why?|Prompt given by Ademal, creator of Ethnis
