The Dynasties at the End of the World - The Farlands

The Farlands are separated from the other regions not only by distance, but also by circumstance. Where in most lands humans actively attempt to exterminate any rat populations that grow too large(to much less success than they think), in the Farlands humans treat rats with disregard at worst and reverence at best. Without the constant threat of destruction from angry giants, rat societies in the Farlands have been able to organize into long-standing dynasties.   The prevailing philosophy amongst the dynasties is one of perfection. Although the specifics vary greatly from dynasty to dynasty, most employ some sort of caste system by which their citizens are organized. Members of each caste are intended to focus on a specific aspect of life. This allows them to accomplish things most rats of other regions can only dream of: Farlands rats practice agriculture, build large cities, and have complex traditions of art, philosophy, and science. The goods produced in the Farlands fetch exceptional prices no matter where they are sold. Their high level of quality is matched only by their rarity.   The paintings and poetry of the Farlands show idyllic domains of rich fields, beautifully-tamed wilderness, and rats living in perfect order and harmony for the betterment of all. Of course, perfection is a nebulous concept. At the best of times there are individual rats chafing under the yoke of their caste. Be they young farmer or aging noble, those who go against the system will face censure, banishment, or even death. Acceptance of one's place is seen as the highest virtue, while rebellion is a heinous crime against both dynasty and nature.   At the worst of times, the dynasties are places of senseless bloodshed and paralyzing paranoia. A differing of opinions on what cheese should be eaten at festivals flares into a war of ideology and dogma as each faction strives to prove their vision of perfection superior. An incompetent ruler makes a list of contradictory decrees and production grinds to a halt as lower-caste rats do their best to follow every inane law in order to avoid rebuke. With the freeing of the Seas, there's no shortage of Farlanders looking to escape(or expand) the rigid hierarchies of their homelands.
