The Roiling Chaos
The Roiling Chaos is a plane of existence that holds within all of the energy associated with Elemental Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. The place is beyond inhospitable; only powerful magic can protect a would-be traveler from a world struggling with its own existence. There are no maps and there is little lore about this place; most wizards and scholars of the metaphysical find the place extremely boring.
Lay of the Land
- A Universe Abandoned: The Roiling Chaos was once a very orderly place, ruled by genies that organized and commanded elemental power, keeping them separate and stable. But, when the Stygians rebelled against the Necromancer-Kings, they summoned genies into the material world, and bound them into servitude. With the forces that kept the elements in check gone, the Roiling Chaos became just that -- a state of metaphysical, magical anarchy.
- Elemental Maelstrom: Storms rage upon a blasted landscape, and yet the powerful rain and whipping wind cannot extinguish the pillars of flame and magma, as the very earth crumbles beneath.
- Elementals: The Chaos is full of mindless beings of flame, rock, and storm, which destroy everything in their path, in constant war against the very idea of ordered being.
- Hostile Environment: The Chaos actively attempts to implode upon itself; storms, floods, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions are literal everyday occurrences in constant flux with one another.
- Arcane Leakage: As is to be expected, the Roiling Chaos seems opposed even to its own boundaries, and instances of elemental energy spilling forth and infecting the material world and its creatures are not unheard of.
- Mephits: These small, imp-like elementals were once the adulating subjects of the genies. They are rarely hostile -- although they are mean, unctuous little creatures, reveling in centuries of anarchy -- but detest their existence here, and try desperately to steal away into the more stable Material Plane. They are the only reasonably-intelligent creatures here, so despite their demeanor, are always more eager to talk than fight.
