Pactmaker's Lancet

The pactmaker's lancet is a tool for both drawing blood and for writing with it. It is used exclusively by Pact Makers in order to seal Free pacts    On one end there is a razor sharp , slightly scooped leaf shaped blade. The blade is shaped so that the tip can be pressed into the skin, and blood can flow down the scoop of the blade to a channel built into the body of the tool. The channel leads to a tiny well at the other end of the tool, which acts as the reservoir for for the pen nib at the end opposite the blade.   It is made of shining, apparently unmarked stainless steel. When it is used to collect blood from pact participants, glowing red runes appear over the body of the pen. The runes stay lit until every last drop of blood has been used up or removed from the lancet; This allows people to see both that it is a true pacemaker's lancet and that no more of their blood remains in the pactmaker's possession, and cannot be used for other pacts or sorcerous purposes.   The Pact maker will use the lancet to draw blood from the subject, usually from the inner arm of the non-dominant hand. The subject is then asked to sign the Free Pact using the pen of the Lancet. Once the blood runes fade, the Pact maker will repeat this process with each participant. In rare cases, such as marriage contracts or for pacts requiring more solemnity, the Pact maker will draw blood from each participant and let it mingle in the barrel of the pen before each signs.

Significance

Lancets are passed down to worthy apprentices when older pactmakers die or retire. Some apprentices spend years and years waiting for a lancet to come into their possession. In fact, some never actually become true pactmakers, instead spending their entire career working for a master pactmaker, writing the contracts out beforehand, and then bringing them to the Pactmaker to be sealed with the blood and magics of the lancet
