The Crimson Dagger

"Never be afraid to rock the boat. If anyone falls off, they were clearly not suited to being on board in the first place."
~ Arlinar Carqen, half-elf sailor
The Crimson Dagger was a large wooden sailing vessel that was constructed in 2803 JR. It primarily served as merchant ship, transporting items from various sea-ports along the Sword Coast. It was most notable for transporting shipments of arrows, forged in the gnomish town of Quiverton, to the cities and towns of the north. It was built in the port-town of Luskan, a few hundred miles north of Neverwinter and was given the name 'Crimson Dagger' by the half-elf Arlinar Carqen, the ship's original first-mate and weapons master.   It's original captain was a shield dwarf named Olam Dorrikson, but over the years, the ship has been captained by many a sailor. It's final voyage was captained by the young halfling Garret Candlecrunch, a firmly non-religious seaman, who was said to be gravely out of touch with Umberlee, goddess of the ocean. While this fact indeed troubled his crew, who had been taught from a young age to remain in the Wavemother's favour, they were simply too impressed by the young halfling's sailing ability and inspiring presence to raise any real concerns.   However, in the year 3007 JR, during the ship's first voyage under its new captain, the Crimson Dagger was caught in a treacherous storm, and during the fray, was boarded by a group of pirates led by Hazaar the Ruthless. The pirates slaughtered the ship's crew, all except for the captain, who leapt overboard with nothing but his hammer and a book of prayers, stolen from his first-mate's cabin.   The pirates have not been seen since, and neither has either ship, causing some to believe that they were destroyed in the violent storm. Others theorise that they were caught in an extra-planar portal, were tricked by a sea-hag or attacked by a curious bronze dragon, though most of these theories have no real basis.   Garret, however, survived the encounter, washing up on a beach not far from Luskan, where he was found by an emissary of Umberlee, a cleric named Aeron Damphair, who nursed him back to health. Garret began devoting his life to the Church of the Wavemother, as he believed his very survival that day to have been divine intervention, on the goddess' behalf. He later became an adventurer, known simply as 'The Captain'.   In 3016 JR, a small replica of the Crimson Dagger was put on display in the centre of Luskan. It is occasionally used as a shrine for sailors to pray beside before embarking on a perilous voyage.
