The Nightwell
In the center of the city of Skyhaven, capital of the floating empire, sits a well ten feet wide and eternally deep, filled with a blackness deeper than the void. Some call it The Whispering Hell, and indeed some say that at night the well speaks, whispering in an unknown language. Scholars claim that this whispering is the wind, and that any who claim to hear voices are delusional. Regardless of whether the well speaks or not, one thing is certain: In this world where death is an impossibility, the well seems to be the exception. Any who enter the well evaporate into a black mist, unraveling layer by layer as the flesh is stripped from their form, followed by muscle, organs and finally bone. Those who die to the well are never seen again.
But then, maybe it isn't a death at all. Maybe the well just goes all the way through the world, and falling into the well is the same as falling off the floating empire. Recently, new nightwells have begun to appear all over Skyhaven.
