Marshal
The Salt-Kin of the Soul-Breaker Islands have a special title they confer on those who have earned the respect of their fellow citizens. The inhabitants of a given island can call for their island to install a Marshal by voting for one at their annual moot. Once the call for a Marshal passes the moot vote, there is a call for nominations, and then a final vote to confirm a nominee as the new Marshal.
Normally the results of a moot vote for Marshal is a forgone conclusion. But history does record instances of contested Marshal votes. Unfortunately many of those ended in bloodshed.
The powers of a Marshal are comparable to that of a Baron in one of the duchies on the mainland. Except instead of answering to a Duke, they answer to the islands inhabitants who elected them. The position is held for life, and is not a hereditary title.
After a Marshal dies, that island is without one until another is nominated and elected by a moot. some islands go years or even decades between Marshals. Most islands do not see a need for a Marshal. There are currently three Marshals in the Soul-Breaker Islands. They belong to the islands of Dezeir, Desepir, and Deston.
