Feran Hegemony
The empire of the Feran people began as a loose federation of tribes banding together for survival. Over the generations they grew in power.
The first emperor took the throne in year 368 of the Mandate, 200 years before the Cleansing of Eratea.
Later generations of Ferans grew dissatisfied with imperial rule, leading to a coup headed by the military and Sciential. The last Feran emperor was assassinated in year 1132 of the Mandate, and replaced with the Court of the Archons, an oligarchic structure that has remained in place to date.
Demography and Population
The vast majority of the population are citizens, the non-Feran descendants of the surrounding nations that the Ferans conquered or assimilated in their rise to power. While citizenry does not confer the level of political and social power afforded to the Blessed pure-bloods, there are few other bars to a citizen amassing great wealth and luxury for his or herself under the auspices of the Hegemony. It is this, perhaps more than anything else, that has kept the citizenry from rising up against the smaller ruling class.
At the top of the class system are the pure-blood Ferans, the Blessed. While the citizenry are allowed something that approximates political representation, it is the pure-bloods who set policy, determine laws, and enforce those laws. Although they are the smallest demographic, the vast majority of the Hegemony's wealth and power resides with them.
Slags are the smallest demographic within the population. In truth, as they are not considered fully human, they are never listed on any census. They are scattered throughout the empire, wherever an unpaid workforce was needed, but are found most often near industrial cities and agricultural areas.
While all members of the population bear the demonym of Feran, only pure-bloods are considered ethnically Feran.
