Nicolas Sauter

Divine Descendant

Written by Endrise

Nicolas Jin Sauter (a.k.a. The Wind of Faramund)

If you spend your time long enough in the business of trading, you know when some fool tries to sell you dirt for gold.
— Nicolas Sauter

Current leader of the Trade Winds Guild, Nicolas Sauter is one of the few living descendants of the merchant goddess Tressa. Still upkeeping her legacy and tenets in genuine ways, many do know him to be more infamous in the business than he might seem.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Nicolas resembles the typical Sylph with deep blue eyes and hair white as snow. A nobleman dressed for the title he wears and willing to upkeep that look for everyone.

Tidy is the best way to describe him: hair well kept, clothes never dirty and wealth presented by the number of rings on his hand. A cane in one hand and a pocket watch in the other.

Special abilities

Nicolas shows an affinity with the winds due to his Sylph blood, allowing him access to some lesser spells. From Feather Fall to minor flight, making him decent utility caster.

What makes him unique is his connection with Tressa. As a proclaimed descendant, he borrows some of the deity's divine powers. Amongst them is an eye that can appraise any item for its worth, allowing Nicolas to spot forgeries and scams from far away.

Apparel & Accessories

The clothing worn by him cost as much as some people's annual income. A grey suit with a white coat, black gloves adorned with a ring on each finger. All while carrying a cane with the family crest on the very top and concealed a deadly blade within.

During travels, Nicolas also carries around a Bag of Holding on his hip. A gift from his father, adorned as well with the family crest. Some believe it to be owned by Tressa herself.

Specialized Equipment

Due to the constant threat of espionage and assassination, Nicolas carries around a weapon on him at all times. His most prevelant one is his swordcane, something the Sylph learned to use with deadly efficiency. Though even without it he has some other tools up his sleeve.

Beyond his efficiency with the blade, the guild leader also carries a musket with him. And if he can't shoot someone to defend his life, he always has a small blade hidden within his boot.

Virtues & Personality perks

Lies are the best way to lose a customer.
If you were wise you learn how to sweeten the truth.
— Nicolas Sauter

Nicolas is a man of his word despite what he puts people through while doing business. He is both honest and follows up on his promises, even if he might be reluctant doing so at times.

He is also passionate about the things he does. If given the time to boast, he will gladly share some business advice or talk about his love for music.

Vices & Personality flaws

Nicolas can be an ruthless bastard when it comes to his behaviour towards others. The man does not enjoy being proven wrong or talked down to, and will not hesistate to defend his position.

He can also be very focused on his work, leading to him being hard to socialise with. Time is crucial for the Sylph and anything that would waste it often has no interest for him.

Such mindset leads to him enforcing harsh work environments with strict deadlines, making him hard to work with. But as long it is profitable, he considers it functional.

Social

Religious Views

Even with his ties with Tressa and her followers, Nicolas himself is not a religious person in the slightest. He believes in their existence but does not put his trust in them.

Hobbies & Pets

Even with a busy schedule, Nicolas does enjoy spending his time in the arts. Performance and music are his favourites, knowing how to play both the piano and lute.

Many also know him for his love with theatre plays, spending his evenings there when one is in town. Sometimes he even takes advantage of business meetings to go visit one, only to discuss sales right after. It is such a passionate hobby of his he even writes plays by himself.

Speech

Do me a favour and think before you speak. It tends to help in the long run.
— Nicolas Sauter

Nicolas is a man of few words most of the time, keeping things clear and simple. Harshness defines his tone, being blunt and straight to the point with many of his conversations. It often gets to a point that he can be exhausting to talk with if not interested.

When frustrated, his sentences can go down to single words, refusing to waste any more on people. He does not even let them speak, interrupting them if not repeating himself louder so that they understand. Only when they listen does he bother to elaborate.

His vocabulary can also get quite expansive. He likes to sprinkle metaphors to explain things or gets flowery with his language. During deals this is his preferred way of talking, wanting to make sure any partners accept his offers.

History

The relationship between Bob Schlimme and Nicolas Sauter is a short-lived one. When Bob first came to Faramund to deploy his own schemes, he quickly was confronted by the Trade Winds Guild. With some struggle he eventually registered himself, joining the guild to "legally" do his trading.

That quickly came to an end however, when Bob caused an arson within the city's walls, almost burning half the capital down to try and ruin another merchant's stall. In a fleeing panic he fled the place, chased by the guards and only escaping by the hair on his chin. Ever since, Nicolas banned his presence from the place, demanding immediate capture if he does shows up.

Wealth & Financial state

As the head of the Trade Winds Guild and descendant of Tressa, Nicolas has wealth to spare. Considered one of the richest individuals in Faramund, his riches are not simply in gold.

Instead, Nicolas's wealth is measured in how much he owns of the city's market. Multiple businesses rely on his funds and how much they pay back to compensate. And through his family heritage he can afford living in his Mansion in the upper districts.

He also owns several rare collector items under his name. From rare weaponry from across Sichelan to things imported from afar, leading to a vast collection. And if he can, he will show off his wealth on his person through his attire alone.

No matter how you put it, few can deny the luxury Nicolas lives in.

He sounds like an annoying person to deal with. Very well fleshed out, he feels real. Nice work.
