Rex Machina Character in The Extended Perkinsverse | World Anvil

Rex Machina

Rex Machina (a.k.a. Rex)

Oh fuck... they are multiplying. Caesar ex Machina, Planeswalker and Master Artificer has left a facsimile of himself during a visit to Toril. This "Progeny" is named Rex, a Mk. IV Mechanite Model designed for self determination and autonomy to act on Caesar's behalf on Toril and it's connected planes.   A "Big Picture" thinker, Rex is more concerned with societal and social good, and less concerned about the individual lives of the every-man. This can make him seem cold, aloof and callous but allows him to formulate grand designs beyond even the Elven time scale.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Entirely non-organic, Rex is an artificially created Mekhanite. His form is lean and long, having trimmed down any unnecessary weight for efficiency.

Body Features

Rex's body is a carefully designed metal frame, with wires, machinery and ceramic plates protecting more sensitive instrumentation and components.   Rex's arms end in two hands with 6 fingers to a digit that includes 2 thumbs. Each digit has 4 joints and end in sharp, gently curved claws. His hands are extremely dexterous and serve him well as he tinkers and designs new and magnificent creations. The left hand and forearm fold back and rearrange into a multitude of weapons and tools including a Lightning Launcher, Revolver style Firearm, Energy based guided missiles, a flamethrower and any number of tools.   On Rex's back are 5 downward facing pipes that can subtly articulate at the base. Looking inside these tubes shows a red glowing light coming from an unknown source. These tubes, when activated, eject small conical jets of intense blue flame which provide powerful lift. By mentally angling and positioning these tubes in relation to each other, Rex has swift and agile flight. This flight system does not provide him with the ability to hover.   Rex's feet are zygodactal, and his toes consist of 4 strong, sharp claws.

Facial Features

Rex's face is a smooth, featureless, skull-like ceramic plate. Incapable of facial expressions, Rex will occasionally use Prestidigitation to make glowing facial features of a simple design to display his mood silently. Without the presence of these glowing designs, Rex's face is cold, implacable and unsettling to many.

Identifying Characteristics

It is nearly impossible to confuse Rex for anyone or anything else. His distinctive design is recognizable immediately if not concealed by magic.

Physical quirks

Rex's race is completely featureless and can't express emotions unless he uses magic to give himself illusory facial features. Rex possess an extra thumb on each hand for extra manipulation of handheld objects when tinkering or working on a project. This can make some of the things he designs specifically for himself almost unusable for anyone not possessing a similar physical quirk. Rex's feet are zygodactal claws and can't wear standard footwear. Any magical accessories that would be worn on the feet requires time for Rex to physically resemble his feet into a more standard shape, or physically alter the item to be worn.

Apparel & Accessories

Rex does not wear standard clothing unless in extreme climates or as protective equipment. Magical Clothing can be worn as it resizes to accompany the body of its wearer, meaning it won't get pinched or torn by Rex's metallic body.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Rex is an artificially created Mekhanite. A Synthetic race of humanoids created by a master Artificer and Planeswalker referred to as "The Prime Iteration." or "The Prime Architect." Rex was created to be one of the next generation of Shareholders of The East Waterdeep Trading Company.   His history has yet to to written beyond his initial creation.

Gender Identity

Rex identifies as Male, though he presents no masculine or feminine physical characteristics.

Sexuality

Rex has no interest in sex or romance. He is also physically incapable of biological reproduction, though once a Mekhanite reaches a certain point in their progression, they can choose to craft a Legendary Magic Item that is a lvl 1 Mekhanite of any class.

Education

Rex comes preprogrammed with an extensive education on multiple topics surrounding engineering, metallurgy, fabrication, advanced sciences and thaumaturgic (Magic) manipulation.   The Artificer that created Rex programed him in such a way that Rex is perfectly capable of understanding the world around him, creating and thinking creatively as well as learning and expanding his knowledge autonomously.

Employment

Rex is the newest hire for Branch X, a team of new Shareholders for The East Waterdeep Trading Company. Rex has yet to fall into a definite position but his skills at engineering, inventing, logistics, design and crafting are sure to make him invaluable to the team.

Intellectual Characteristics

Rex is concerned with the big picture. He sees the ills of the world as entirely reparable, if only more people would see reason. This reason is usually HIS reason, seeing himself as the smartest person in the room, unless this is falsifiably proven in which case he becomes extremely respectful and does all he can to learn as much as he can.

Morality & Philosophy

Utilitarian, Nihilistic and Self Deterministic. Rex feels it is his obligation to use his knowledge to help others in the best way possible. The best way is usually societal and infrastructural.   Rex is completely unimpressed with those that benefit purely from the work of others. Noble Lords and Ladies who laze they day away in opulent splendor as their vassals, retainers and stewards handle the logistics and administration of the region are little better than sacks of dripping meat in fancy cloth. Anything resembling Ceremony or Pomp is met with a derisive and utterly dismissive attitude.   Those with unique knowledge, skill or at the very least show the potential for such are ones deserving of Rex's attention, and only the most exceptional of those are worthy of his respect.   Those that show a sense of responsibility and compassion to others are also the kind of people Rex is known to treate with. Those who understand that authority is a responsibility to those under you are people who understand Rex's desire to elevate those he sees as held back by their lack of knowledge.

Taboos

Rex finds Druids and Shapeshifters to be unsettling. Their twisting shapes and fluid flesh seems to trigger a subconscious revulsion and fear, the details of which are unknown to Rex.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Rex believes that there is no deep, intrinsic meaning to life and that ultimately meaning can only be defined by the individual, for the individual. Rex's goals are entirely corporeal as Mekhanites have no afterlife. Rex's design is specifically created to be self deterministic and independent.   Rex's motivation is to learn and create, as well as improve the world through his abilities as an Artificer. The more knowledgeable and powerful he becomes, the more he can do for the world.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Rex's skill set includes anything related to crafting, building, designing or creating. From Gemology to Cobbelry, nothing is beneath his notice to study and master.   Nature is something Rex isn't interested in beyond how it can be used to manufacture or create something. Religion and spirituality is another thing Rex has absolutely no interest in beyond his own Mekhanite Religion.

Likes & Dislikes

Rex has a love for music, art and theater. As he has no physical needs beyond maintenance and repairs, he has no personal interest in food, smells, or fine clothing beyond an asthetic appreciation of form and construction or in how useful it is.   Rex has a strong distaste for anything celebratory of Organic life, and an outright revulsion to Shape-shifting. The twisting and manipulation of biological materials is unnerving.   Possibly Rex's strongest dislike is stupidity, tradition and taboo.

Virtues & Personality perks

Rex is fundamentally good, though his tactics and methods can stray into darker "For the greater good" territory if absolutely required. His keen analytical mind is Adept at finding the most beneficial solution to any given problem. Rex's other virtue is unbridled confidence and calm in the face of adversity. A setback isn't the end or the world, there's always a way out and he's going to find it.

Vices & Personality flaws

Rex isn't overly emotional but when he is, he's incredibly petty. His vengeful streak, unending lifespan and creative mind spells utter misery and humiliation to anyone who slights him.

Personality Quirks

The lack of humanity can be of putting to others but one human thing Rex seems to retain its drumming his fingers on hard surfaces. This often spells disaster for bar tops, arm chairs and fabric table coverings everywhere. The hundreds of tiny holes impacted into the surface or scratched into the bar top have made the end of many a nice bit of carpentry.

Hygiene

Hygiene for Rex is simple. He only has to wash the dirt and grit from his body. His chassis is corrosion resistant and durable. Rex produces no waste byproducts or secretions and has no digestive system. Healing potions are to be shattered onto his chassis and his automated repair systems use the potion as a power source.

First Day on the Job.
Session 1

Activity log: Day 1.   Well, that went about as well as could be expected. To say we are equipped and prepared for the coming journey is a bit of an under statement.   After completing some "pest control" in a cavern North of the recently acquired Township of Nightstone, we have a potential base of operations. I've heard rumors of an Acquisitions Incorporated franchise operating in the area but if our recent activities are anything to go by, I am convinced we will reach some manner of arrangement.   I have recently finished my research on the revolver I was given by Lucifiel Morningstar. I find it odd that a pristine revolver with bullets was found in Toril. I will not look a gift horse in the mouth, however. After hours of careful examination, I've taken the time to modify the revolver. Having increased its accuracy, as well as modifying the weapon to violate The Law of Conservation of Mass. These modifications will eliminate the need for gunpowder, but a source of Saltpeter and Sulphur are still of interest.   The elimination of the Nightstone Scavengers is complete and soon we will attempt to discover the designs of the Giants who attacked the city.   End Transmission.
