The Steel Yard

About an hours drive east of Adelaide, this was once a steelworks in the town of Langton. Many of the residences are now derelict but the steelworks itself has been repurposed as the hub of a First Born settlement, along with some of the surrounding town.

Demographics

Around 85% australian by birth. Predominantly European herritage (50%) but a sizeable number of indigenous people (20%) and Asian (20%) with the remainder from Africa or the Americas. Most people in Steelyard are working class or unemployed (or work as hunters or scavengers). There is a significant criminal element, but also a modest group of middle class citizens who have skills in technology or other specialist areas. Only a very small number of citizens are wealthy enough to be considered upper class, and certainly would not pass as such in an Enclave.

Government

The town has a mayor and a deputy. Elections are held when the mayor wants, or when the public get fed up with the current mayor. Taxation is whenever the mayor decides the town needs money, and smart mayors try to do this as little as possible. Businesses are taxed regulary however, particularly those that cater to outside visitors. Law is enforced by a sheriff and her deputies.

Defences

Rough walls made of metal sheets and scrapped cars bridge the gaps between buildings in order to make a passable defensive wall. Nothing you could not climb over if you had a mind to. There are also a couple of watch towers set atop tall buildings. The main gate providing road access to the settlement is monitored during the day by two deputies, and strangers are reported to the sheriff as they enter.

Industry & Trade

The main sources of income are the fight pits and the repair yard. The former draws in money from Adelaide, the latter from nomadic first born who need their vehicles maintained. Other sources of income are the nearby farms, and the numerous scavengers who live in town and pick over any nearby ruins.

Infrastructure

The steel mill itself houses a bustling bazar, a very popular fight pit that provides a lot of the towns income, and Desdemona's, a more upmarket bar. Outside are other traders, a doctors clinic, more bars and a very successful vehicle repair workshop. Beyond the town are numerous farms and ranches.

Assets

The town has little money, and tends not to bother itself with things like food storage. It does however have power in the form of solar cells plus a bio-generator, a water purification plant, and a cell phone tower that provides coverage for the local area.

Guilds and Factions

There is a small clique of fight promoters who supply the fight pits with talent. Crime is run by the deeply unpleasant Gilpin the Shark.

History

The steel mill itself had already shut down by the time of the demon, and so afterwards, as a large vacant building it became a suitable place to house first born. As the local population faded away and withdrew to Enclaves, some of the more stable First Born realised that the town was now theirs, and that with work it could be turned into a viable community.

Architecture

Heavy industrial at the centre, but with regular residences (a mixture of flats and houses) beyond the mill.

Geography

The steel yard is situated at the foot of a range of hills. Plains to the west, hills to the east. There is a stream nearby, though it sometimes runs dry, and an old train track that runs through the town and the yard itself.

Natural Resources

Up in the hills are some abandonned mines, and the area is forested and provide some opportunity for hunting. The plains are clear and there is plenty of farmland, though dry seasons can make it hard to grow crops.
