Freya's Welcoming

History

Freya's Welcoming was created by Freya, Florence Welch, and Alex Daddario as an embrace for joining womanhood.

Execution

The ritual takes place at a secret location of Freya's choosing and begins with the participants surrendering themselves to the earth. They are brought down to Freya's secret underground location, given a concoction to drink, that lulls them into sleep. They awaken underwater and surface to realize they are in a lake surrounded by forestry. No matter the season they begin in, they awaken to somewhere where it is always a light spring. Some presume they are no longer on earth, which is correct. The girls make their way to the shore where the other participants, typically their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, older sisters, and other female relatives wait for them.    They dry off and the family of a girl, typically the mother(s), will begin painting their face and body with their blood. They are then dressed in opaque robes, each girl selects whichever color she would like to wear. Then the singing and dancing begins as the relatives of the girls watch.   The first song is always "Big God", followed by "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful". Both songs are sung by Florence alone as the girls dance. After these two songs, the girls will begin to perform songs of Florence that they have selected that speak to them personally. No two girls are allowed to sing the same song, so it's recommended to have a backup song in mind. The order of girls typically goes from oldest to youngest, but it's not a strict rule, and often the most outgoing girls will sing first.   When a girl sings all other girls will sing and dance with her.   The second to last and last song will be sung by Florence Welch as the main singer and the girls participating. The songs are "Mother" in which the girls will perform for their mothers, if they do not have mothers, either because they are the first generation or their mother is dead. The last song if the original version of "Third Eye". A song about change and growth and the new world they will face as women.
