Nuisha's Fortress

We will not give in, these walls will not fall, and the Empire will not conquer us.
— Anku, commander of Nuisha's Fortress
When the Ostarian Empire started pushing southwards, the Aghu Sovereignty had to create makeshift fortresses as they didn't have many. The most famous of these castles is Nuisha's Fortress, a former store house that held off invading forces for years. Part of its success is attributed to its legendary commander, Anku, who rallied the townspeople and never backed down in spite of the overwhelming force that stood against them. This fortress has stood strong in the face of invaders even after the fall of its sovereignty and the founding of a new one. Makeshift fortresses in Kohri, especially those from about the same time period are often called Nuisha Fortresses.

Denizens

There is still a military presence in Nuisha's Fortress consisting of a regiment of soldiers and a few officers. A handful of tour guides work here to lead visitors around and educate them about it.

Contents & Furnishings

Simple furniture and military equipment fills most of the rooms alongside more decorative items commemorating the fortress' and its history. The public rooms are furnished with nicer furniture, plenty of decorative items, and various artifacts from the war.

Valuables

Several personal items of Anku are stored in the fortress including their armour, sword, earrings, comb, and a set of knucklebones. Some people claim that Anku's body and their more valuable possessions are also inside but not displayed.

Alterations

Work has begun on an outer wall as well as more space inside the fortress itself. With these changes it will start to really look like the fortress that it is.
— Anku
The stilts that the castle rests on have been reinforced as have the already thick walls. As time has gone on, more rooms and levels have been added. Other fortifications like arrow slits, machicolations, battlements, and more have also been added. An external wall has been built around the original structure.

Architecture

The fortress has a wooden base which has been replaced largely with stone. It's a tall structure that stands on a tall stone foundation and has two stories on top of this. It is surrounded by a thick fortified wall and the main building is similarly fortified. As peace has reigned for so long, the fortress has become more decorative. Large colourful banners adorn the now painted walls. Decorative woodwork, tiles, textiles, and glass in addition to paint graces the inside.

History

The store house was originally built to hold the increasing number of crops that needed to be stored either for future use or until they were exported. Then the War of Southern Ostari started, the Ostarian Empire was abel to conquer large swathes of As the Ostarian Empire soldiers marched ever closer, the townsfolk lead by Anku worked day and night to fortify the town and its best defensible building, the store house. The town's walls held for an impressively long amount of time but they eventually fell. By that point, the store house was well fortified and the majority of the townsfolk were able to fall back there. They were able to hold out until reinforcements arrived, lifting the siege.

Anku by Rinmaru

Anku acted as the townspeople's rock throughout this siege, always trying to ensure that everything and everyone was being taken care of. They also worked hard to keep morale up and keep the townsfolk from giving in to the invaders. They continued to help out the war effort and act as the leader of Nuisha's Fortress until their death. The store house turned fortress continued to see use throughout the entire war. It was under siege several times throughout the war but despite a few close calls, it never completely fell. Throughout the war it became more and more fortress like and it was expanded to fit its growing importance. The fortress served as a major base of operations in the region for both the Aghu and Duvi Sovereignties.

Tourism

It is a fairly popular tourist destination, especially among historians. Visitors are only allowed in some parts of the fortress as other parts are still being used for military purposes. Visitors tend to be most interested in the fortifications, the outer wall, and the personal items of Anku that are stored here.
