Gantos's Charter

Before this letter, Gantos was a minuscule sovereignty with a nebulous government. It surely would have crumpled. While it's still in danger of crumpling, it is in a much better position thanks to the addition of the Bigant League to the sovereignty.

Purpose

The document was sent to increase Gantos's power as the sovereignty was just founded, very small, and incredibly vulnerable. While originally it was only meant to propose an alliance between Gantos and the Bigant League, the scribe was able to twist words and leave the purpose ambiguous enough that it ended with the Gantos and the Bigant Leage merging into one single sovereignty.

Document Structure

Clauses

The document proposed an alliance between Gantos and the Bigant League so that both could share reosurces, especially military resources with each other. The document played heavily off of fears of northward expansion by the Cadrial Empire but interestingly enough for a document from this time period it also cited Zhaliya as a possible threat. The charter also draws apon shared culture as most residents of Gantos and the Bigant League are part of the same ethnic group.

Caveats

The Bigant League interperated this alliance proposition as an offer to become part of Gantos and recognized what an oppertunity like this could offer. They agreed to join but under the condition that the leader of their league was established as the sovereign. In return the Gantosians would have better government stability , the Bigant League's resources and land, and the combined sovereignty would be known as Gantos. Thus Gantos as most people know it was established.

Historical Details

Public Reaction

While many of the Bigant League's leadership was in favor of uniting with Gantos, the common people were much less supportive. They saw the charter as dooming the Bigant League to foreign rule and ineveitable demise. As the full details of the deal became more evident, public opinion in the League began to sway in favor of the charter. There were still vocal groups that opposed it though and these groups have seen massive increases as the current sovereign is uniterested and power struggles break out. In the areas that were already part of Gantos before the charter, it had and continues to have great public support.

Legacy

Gantos continues to be ruled by the Bigant League's leader's decendents and continues to enjoy the resources of the Bigant League. The scribe that authored the charter for Gantos was granted noble status and his decendents often serve as advisors to the Gantosian sovereign.
