Nadinne Ermenred Character in The Denary Realms | World Anvil

Nadinne Ermenred

An Illustrious Mind

Princess Nadinne Ruby Ermenred (a.k.a. Jokaster, Rubicund, Carmine Storm)

The mage stopped reading the heavy tome on his desk and looked at the new arrival, standing at the door of his office. There was bright light behind her, which made it difficult to discern her features so he beckoned for her to close the door and come inside the room. The young girl, assuming that she was young because she did not look older than one fourth of his age, stood in front of his desk with an undetermined look on her face, after she did as he asked. He took another look at her now that the light was more favorable to his aging eyes. She was of slender build, almost scrawny, her hair left unbound to tumble in front of her eyes. Her clothes were also unimpressive, something a villager would wear at a festival perhaps. He thought that he would need to have another talk with his servant for allowing all kinds of people enter his office without reason after this.
"What brings you here, young lady?" asked the mage, allowing a hint of annoyance to show, hoping to end this encounter early.
"I wish to become your student. I can pay." came her reply, filled with the youthfulness of her age and a hopeful look in her eyes.
"However, I am afraid that I don't accept new students. And you seem too young to be here." The girl's face instantly changed upon hearing his response and she looked dejected now, as if he had crushed her hopes.
"But I am good with magic. I just need to learn a little bit more about the theory and you are the best around, everyone says so." This was starting to get on his nerves. He wanted to get back to his book.
"Is that so? I am flattered. But I am afraid my answer remains the same. Come find me when you grow up a little. Now feel free to see yourself out and send my assistant in as you do that." and with that, he reached to continue reading his tome. But his hands found nothing, where the heavy book was supposed to be.
Looking at the desk, puzzled, he found it to be empty, the tome missing. A whistle from the girl drew his attention back to her, and she gave him a nod to look up. The old man raised his eyes to the ceiling even more puzzled. The large tome had somehow moved from his desk, and was stuck to the ceiling with the letters on its back glowing. He looked back at the girl, found her to be grinning, and for the first time in his life he felt that he rushed to a judgement that was completely wrong.

Prologue

Jokaster was born in Ramine, the capital of Vermell. The daughter of King Reimund she was seventh in line to the throne but she never wanted to be a princess. Vermell was a small kingdom, bordering with Aurelia and Jokaster, or Nadinne as was her given name was always restless, from a young age. She was bored of the traditions and customs and all she wanted to do was read and learn. When she realized that her education was lacking, at the extraordinary age of twelve nonetheless, she set out to leave her family and friends and become Rastlain's apprentice, the most well known mage at that time. Her father at first didn't want to grant her request but his hand was forced when she used one of the oldest customs in Vermell, the Naming. Under this custom, a person could change their given name, take a new one and become free of the social anchors that came with her previous one. It was an old custom, never used but Jokaster found it, used it and soon she was on a caravan set for Aurelia's capital, Azalea.

An Illustrious Path

Once in Azalea, Carmine Storm, as was her name now, became one of the few apprentices that Rastlain ever had. He was taken by her intellect and her skill in magic, despite her young age. She spent many years under his tutelage and became integrated to the royal family as she was very good friends with Princess Alyssane. She also became acquainted with Nathan Whytelaw at that time. When Rastlain passed away, King Lonardo offered her the position of Advisor to the King which she accepted happily. She continued to educate herself by seeking books from all corners of the world and was instrumental in many of Aurelia's greatest inventions. After the royal family came under attack due to an attempt of outside forces to wreak havoc within the kingdom, Jokaster saved Princess Alyssane. Jokaster, having earned this name as a nickname by Princess Alyssane chose to keep it and together with Nathan Whytelaw founded the White and Black Roses, restructuring Aurelia's Army. She then took the mantle as the Captain of the White Roses.

The Irruption Wars

Jokaster soon realized that this life was not for her. Excusing herself from and getting permission to travel in pursuit of knowledge, she created a group of magical users, former students of Rastlain, called The Seekers. The group's sole purpose was to travel Aell and seek knowledge, advancing magic and technology. It was shortly after this that the invasion of Aell begun and Jokaster was forced to withdraw to Aurelia and fight alongside Nathan Whytelaw. <> She witnessed the loss of the entire Royal Family and the crowning of Princess Alyssane. She was instrumental in helping Nathan Whytelaw fight the civil war after Charles Galefire made a claim for the throne by marrying Princess Alyssane. And most importantly, she was the key to finding the way to close the portals to Aell, shutting them down and effectively blocking the path of the invading army. Following the events that had Nathan Whytelaw leaving Aell, Jokaster took up his mantle and was instrumental in helping restore peace and order to Aell during his absence.

A Great Mind

Jokaster, working with the Daesan, found a way to harness the magic that surrounds everything and make it work for people who had no experience with it. She is credited with creating the Sihkern, or Magcores as they are known. She is the only non-native to be accepted in the Council of Technology and has been revered by the Daesan as one of them. Following Nathan's return, Jokaster was surprised like the rest of Aell to see him kill Ashionis and disband the Holy Church of Unity. But it is said that after a lengthy discussion with him, she went on and helped him establish The Order much to her follower's chagrin. After The Order was established, Jokaster founded The Academy together with Alluin Farkana, her husband, and stayed as its Overseer to her death.

Bells & Whistles

A lot of great magical inventions are attributed to Jokaster, like the Rubicund which gave her yet another nickname, or the Mydral. However given the fact that she died at 114 years old, many believe that she had found the secret to prolong life, possibly by magical means. Besides that, she had three children with Alluin and her genealogy can be traced to today, under the surname Storm.

Quotes & Catchphrases
  • Heroes are not meant to simply punch people and get into fights. The best Heroes are the ones who find the way to end a fight before it starts.
  • Matters of magic need to be handled with extreme care. Magic is a responsibility, a weapon you must use to help people, not hinder their lives.
  • There needs to be education for those who possess extraordinary affinity for magic. And we, the greatest minds, need to find a way to provide the people with such education. Otherwise we must be held accountable for their misuse of the power they possess.
  • I can't really go up against Nathan Whytelaw. Actually, let me rephrase that. I don't want to go up against Nathan Whytelaw. He was instrumental in saving the world, so for whatever followed after that I choose to believe that he has his reasons.
  • My spells have a purple hue because I want them to have a purple hue. End of story.
  • You have been selected to be the first students of the Academy. You have the rare opportunity to learn and continue on to use the lessons you will gain here, to improve the lives of others. You will pave the way for future generations, shaping how magic is taught and creating a foundation upon which others can step and continue driving Aell forward. Welcome and remember, Ex Nihilo Nihil Fit.
