Variance Born
Those that are Variance Born are not a singular ethnicity, instead, they are a collection of peoples of a vast number of ethnicities each with their own ideals, norms, and ways of life bound together by a simple yet significant connection. What groups Variance Born into its own unique group is the distinction in which they were actually conceived and born while on the space station called The Variance. A fairly rare occurrence to occur, despite the significant population on the station.
Variance Born typically share their biological cycle, appearance, etc. with whatever species their parents are, however, they share a strange connection to The Variance, and to each other. Often being drawn to wander the station for no apparent reason, only finding solace from these feelings when in the company of each other.
Those that are born on The Variance have a strange relationship with it. Most of the Variance Born find themselves compelled to wander its halls and corridors, on a strange sojourn with no actual goal that the individual fully understands. However, unlike most that visit The Variance, the Variance Born know exactly where they are at all times. Because the space within The Variance is so huge and ever-changing, it is difficult to finds one way around without often becoming lost. Only those that live on the Variance know where they are going, but even then it is easy to get lost when things so frequently change.
This is not the case for the Variance Born, who have an odd sense of direction while on the space station, even as things constantly change. Though they do not have a photographic memory of the entire station and have no knowledge of areas they have not ventured to, they do have two unexplainable abilities. They always know the most effective way to return to the hub, no matter where they have found themselves in the station. And, they can accurately retrace their steps to any area they have familiarized themselves with on the station, even if it has moved recently.
Because of this ability, those that seek specific areas on The Variance often seek out the assistance of a Variance Born. Making those Variance Born that are well travelled on the station a sought-after commodity, one that can make a decent amount of money. Those Variance Born that do not leave the station, and have an entrepreneurial mind, can easily make a worthy and successful career just from showing people around, especially outsiders from off station. Though, those that are greedy often fall in with the wrong sort and end up dealing with more than they can handle. Despite this, even those that don't make it a career often find themselves using this ability to make some extra cash every now and then.
Often times those that are Variance Born suffer from extreme feelings of disconnection and loneliness, even amongst their own races people or close family members. This commonly leads to an almost impossible to shed wanderlust, which inevitably pulls them away from friends and family. Many Variance Born tend to wander the vast corridors and spaces of The Variance, travelling from space to space seeking something they do not fully understand. Many find themselves unknowingly travelling for years. Other Variance Born, feel a compulsion to leave The Variance, though this is much rarer, in a different sort of wanderlust among the stars. And for similarly unknown reasons find themselves bouncing from system to system in search of an unknown.
However, Variance Born are somehow fully aware when another Variance Born is nearby. And once in the presence of each other seem to find temporary relief from their feelings of disconnection while in each other's presence. For this reason, small communities have occasional been formed comprised exclusively of Variance Born. These communities are never large and are oftentimes temporary, with the group's individual wanderlusts only being quelled for a short amount of time. Regardless, these connections quickly become important to those in the community and they will often seek each other out in times of need. Somehow, those Variance Born that are familiar with each other almost always know where to find each other.
