Lights under the Ice

I stood on a frozen lake. It was so large that it stretch out in all directions around me, as far as the eye could see. It was night time, and above me three moons orbited, each its own indescribable hue. I looked at them, and I something inside me stirred. They are watching you.   Me? Or was I just a photo-crasher?   The ice was thick below my hooves, but I didn't feel any cold. In fact, I didn't feel anything. It was like I was disconnected from my body. But I could still move it. Not numb... this was like controlling something remotely. I looked down then and saw the lights.   Deep, deep beneath the ice there were hundreds of thousands of lights, mirroring the starry sky above me. As I watched, they began to move and swirl. They shifted beneath the glacial prison they were trapped in started to travel towards each other. Away from me.   No! That's not what we meant them for!   The lights continued their journey as the alien voice rang through my mind. I had never heard it before, but it was comforting somehow.   Look how they care for you sister. Look at the mess you've made.   Another voice, this one scolding. Like the howls from drilled ice. I shivered, but I was not cold. The lights condensed into swirling galaxies at the bottom of the lake, enough for me to see the floor of it. Then, they began to spread. Just a little at first, but lights were continually gathered from farther and farther away into massive web-like constellations.   And then they began to die. A scream of frustration echoed through the thin air.   They're killing each other! And you won't even help them!   I watched the darkness begin to spread again, snuffing web after web. At last, it reached the biggest web yet and stopped. The ice beneath me shuddered and cracked and I slid in soundlessly. As I plunged through the ice, I saw great beasts and monsters, all watching me as I plunged down into the depths. I fell towards the great network below me, thundering soundlessly through the water. Finally, I landed on the lake bed, scattering the pebbles that had been stacked neatly at its bottom. Around my feet, small crablike creatures scuttled, and all around me were hundreds of jellyfish. I took a step, and where my feet fell, life grew.   Thank you Linn! I couldn't have done this on my own and she just wouldn't help!   I felt a twinge of regret at those words, but I wasn't sure why.   I began to walk along the lakebed, seeding life as I went. The monsters that I had seen watching me began to follow. I continued along the floor until I reached a sudden drop in the floor. The lights I had seen from above were slowly reforming, and I finally saw what was they were. There were thousands of tiny hexapodal creatures, each carrying their own glowing stone. I watched them, they chucked them into the drop, creating a glowing cascade of light as they did.   The colder voice spoke.   This was to be your grand experiment.   I began to follow the cascade down into the chasm. To everything else it was colossal, but to me it was like stepping into a kiddy pool.   Again, I heard the icey voice in my head.   This will test them. It's time to see if they have potential.   Above me, the ice cracked a second time as a massive fireball punched through. It landed directly inside a mountain crater. Seconds later it exploded and a beast the size of a cocker spaniel, but far grosser burst from it. It was long, with a body that was all legs and jaws. I recoiled, but it crashed into the depths in front of me, burrowing deeper. The rolling cascade of glowing stones followed it. I steeled myself and dived into the hole after it.   They think you're trapped down here sister. Isn't that funny? And that I trapped you.   No! I want nothing to do with that vile cult! They're defacing everything I stand for!   You should have thought about that before you helped them.   I fell deeper and deeper into the hole, following the gnashing jaws of that disgusting worm. Light grew around me, and I began to hear something. It was a heartbeat. I descended into a blinding white cavern. Almost every surface glowed, and in the center, I could hear it.   Thump thump. Thump thump. The sound a child makes in the womb. But who's child is it? What will it do when it wakes?   The light began to grow, and the heartbeat grew with it.   I woke up in a cold sweat, the blanket slipping off my shoulders. Cicero glanced at me in surprise. "A nightmare?" He reached out hesitantly, holding his hand to the side of my face.   "I don't think... It wasn't mine." I looked at his eyes, the only visible part of his face behind is mask. "It was her's." Cicero brought his hands away, and I could see the frost that covered his claws.   "You do not have much time left. She will wake soon."
