Cinder Species in The Dark Forest | World Anvil

Cinder

Cinders are any form of life that has been touched by the Salamander Flame without dying. Each one has a unique Salamander Flame spark that has formed some form of contract with them. Each one has a unique form, and each one is also bound by the laws of the Dark Forest. These Cinders are the primary shakers and movers of the Dark Forest's story.   Because Cinders have to steal a fragment of the Salamander's power, the creator god sees them as both tragic and taboo. The Salamander Flame itself is more than willing to split itself however, and seeks to continuously produce more Cinders. The Salamander Flame sparks are each their own separate minds however, and may develop their own motivations and drives, such as Vinterdyret's drive to hunt down the Ashvine. The animating sparks can be seen as a merging of the host's mind with that of the original Salamander Flame, producing a unique individual.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Cinders are each distinct in body structure and highly dependent on the original host. Zephnos was a shapeshifting colossus, the Ashvine is a smoldering plant and Vinterdyret is a gigantic beast of ice. The one thing that all of the various Cinders have in common is a fiery core which houses their original spark. If this core is ever extinguished, it's assumed that it would kill the Cinder, but this theory has yet to be tested.
