Science Outposts
Each outpost is dedicated to studying a particular anomaly, old world relic, or other occurrence of scientific note. These outposts are remotely overseen by the Imperial Academy and the Explorer’s Guild in an arrangement that clearly favors the Empire.
Outpost 1 once studied the Stone of Ignus before the great Temple of the Twins was erected and the area was deemed a holy site, unworthy of scientific scrutiny.
Outpost 2 used to reside in the cave behind Ruby Falls, studying the strange currents and aquatic wildlife particular to that area. The falls have since been deemed a holy site to the First Gods, and the outpost has been converted into a shrine to Triton.
Outpost 3 was once called the Twilight Castle, and was not only a scientific base but a military one as well. But the fortification was not prepared for the Second Great Shadow Migration and was razed by the Shadow Army in 215.
Outpost 4 Dragon Stone - why and how does it float? Still unknown
Outpost 5 The Hive - why does it attract bugs? Too dangerous
Outpost 6 is as close to the north pole as possible and studies magnetic anomalies
Outpost 7 is next to and studies a lone Light Tree that’s strayed from the Nevernight Grove, hoping to nurse more saplings into trees to spread around the Empire.
Outpost X - what would have been outpost 8 was never successfully established. The expedition team was caught in a blizzard on their way to the edge of the Eternal Ice to study the Living Shadow and weather patterns of the area. Their remains can still be found, frozen in the tundra at a spot known as The Lost Expedition.
Outpost 8 Ledr Glacier - basic geologic survey, concluded
Outpost 9 studies the Drow Lava Tubes, an abandoned tunnel network with a low number of monsters for some reason the researchers have yet to discover
Outpost 10 Narrow Strait - basic oceanographic survey, concluded
Outpost 11 is the newest outpost and is studying something from ancient times discovered deep in the ice.
The other outposts, numbers 1-5, 8, and 10, have all concluded their research or been abandoned.
