Wano Dez
Want Dez is a Dwarven mining settlement of considerable size in The Shield Hills west of the Henderent Plains. The low entrance is blocked by snow typically 5 months out of the year and the airship dock blocked usually 3 months. The city had so long relied on the great portals instead of the mundane means that when the failed it had to learn quickly to become self-sufficient. The roads into and out the the valley of the surface entrance are windy, windy, and treacherously narrow in places.
Government
Led by a Matriarchal Monarchy with a privy council of the societies matriarchs. Each matriarch presides over an extended family that acts as a family and corporation. Currently there are 237 matriarch of various prestige throughout the city. Membership in these families is not just by genetic ties, but also by elective transferring of members. 79 other matriarchs owe allegiance to the council, but are in the diaspora at various other settlements and colonies.
Defences
Being deep underground it is inaccessible by short range teleports, imprecise teleports and protected from all but the most severe ariel assaults. The passages have a few defenses with multiple gates. Combined with a strong social structure that can readily notice outsiders the place is extremely well defended.
Industry & Trade
Limited purifying of the mined minerals and the jade lapidary work provide the bulk of trade. They are brought up with the spell powered Floating Granite lifting platform to the external airship docking platform.
Their principal trading parter is Embal and it's airship.
Between the great mushroom farms, the alpine berry patch, the farms in the Great Dome, and the lizard herds the population is fed. Though food such as grains, stone fruits and a variety of meets are frequently brought in.
Infrastructure
The central halls include the Priest's hall, Miner's Hall, and the Great Dome. Each is dominated by a different feature. The Priest's Hall by the people's portal, great temple to Dovin, the architect. The Miner's hall is dominated by the great lifting platform going up hundreds of meters. The Great Dome is the deepest of the great halls and has the cave sun. The artificial sun provides light to allow the growing of many vegetables (especially cabbages, turnips, clovers, onions, and carrots).
Assets
The city connects via tunnels to three mines. The upper mine is a serpentine and magnesium mine, the north mine is the titanium mine, and the eastern deep mine is a mix of black and dark green jadeite.
While the mines provide a great resource for export, the working cave sun is especially precious as it provides working light and heat without fire to consume the oxygen.
History
The city has remained strong through it's defenses and isolation. The The Plague of Silmora was less effective against the shorter races and their tight knit structure proved of great benefit during the recent calamities. They have sent out expeditions to create several other settlements in the 70 years, many paying homage to their parent city.
Pre-Crash of the Mystic Engines the city was most often accessed by a group of three portals within it's districts.
Architecture
Stonework, Frescos, statues and all matter of stonework abound. Fantastic bathing pools and fountains worked in stone are popular.
