The Reflection Beast Myth in The Cradle of Worlds | World Anvil

The Reflection Beast

The reflection beast is a creature of myth within the sands of The Raikirian Desert. It is unclear if there is any basis in fact for such a creature existing, however it is commonly parroted that it is the cause of Shimerscale. Though shimerscale is a clearly existing condition, its method on transmission is not clear, which allows the perpetuation of the myth.   Several dozen stories are quite popular regarding this creature. In some it is a kind but tragic figure, in others it is a malevolent force. Most claim it appears as a kaleidoscope of mirrors floating in the air. Its voice as a series of chimes and whistles. It is sought to help produce visions of the future, but feared as your relatives may develop shimerscale. In some tales it provides the hero with the vital information to complete their quest, in others it hunts the hero to impart despair and false information. In some variants of The Tale of Jeb a reflection beast hunts Jeb and he was only rescued because of his kindness to others.   Scholars claim that the myth sprang up because of multiple phenomena being tied together. Most claim shimerscale, desert mirages, and psychic bleed over phenomena due to creatures ingesting the Sand Liot. But a great many still believe it is real, and out there somewhere.

In Art

It inspires some complex illusory costumes in theatre, often being comprised of silks, mirrors and illusory lights. It also is a popular subject for impressionistic painting given how open it is to interpretation.
