Sand Liot Species in The Cradle of Worlds | World Anvil

Sand Liot

Sand Liots are strange emerald green worms that seem to have a psychic connection to each other. A group of Sand Liots is called a writhe, and most natural writhes have a dozen to three dozen worms.   They nest in sand and very sandy soil that the calcify and harden into complex passageways and nodules. These nodules are occasionally found and used as desk ornamentation due to their complex repeating patterns.   Due to their deep nesting (3 feet typically) they are typically found by psychically receptive individuals sleeping on the sand above the nest and having strange writhing dreams.

Basic Information

Anatomy

With an unusually large nervous system for its size, it grows from an inch long to almost two feet. Each 2 inches there is a new "brain" or cluster of nerves that forms. These brains are not connected with nerves but continue to communicate.

Genetics and Reproduction

Is there really more than one? While their bodies reach a length of 4-6 inches long divide asexually into a couple of sections while still able to communicate telepathically.

Growth Rate & Stages

Usually they live in deep sand and sandy soil. Active during wet periods and dormant at other times.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Sand Liot's diet appears to be based on bacteria, and dying vegetation such as the stems of sedums. They have been known to eat anything dead if nothing else is present.

Additional Information

Domestication

Only one instance of a writhe being domesticated is in Orala-Was. This writhe was domesticated by the Vermimancer Kila over four thousand years ago. No subsequent attempt has ever succeeded in producing a self propetuating writhe.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

They can be "milked" after boiling in rendered fat to produce Intrac Jelly, this is highly prized.   They also can be peeled fresh to use the dried and powdered skin as a brilliant green colored pigment used in makeup, paint and even colorful confections.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They seem to be able to sense matter around them without eyes.
