Great Flare Physical / Metaphysical Law in The Cradle of Worlds | World Anvil

Great Flare

The Great Flare is the name given to the catastrophe that was the failure of the Mystic Engines in the year 6897 OR. As this was occurring during the time of the Plague of Silmora there was not a significant amount of resources devoted to discovering the cause as most resources were tied up in trying to fix things and find solutions.   What can be said definitively is that the world of Gorel and it's Moon Gheloer were subject to a giant astral phenomena. It manifested itself as a barely audible hum and faint glow that appears to have been simultaneous over the whole area. Immediately afterwards things failed, most specifically almost all Mystic Engines were found to have been snuffed out. Some appear to have had configurations that provided shielding, but the infrastructure to create new ones had already been compromised with the plague. In combination with the fact most manufacturing of mystic engines used mystic engines in the process, it set much of the world's development back centuries. This was seen by the populations here as a very bad thing, but by the Church of the Earthstar as a blessing. It helped them immensely in their forced quarantine of the planet and many suspected that they may have caused it.   There are many claims by people sating they know what caused it. Among the most popular theories are these...
  • Some claim it was a military device that the elves developed to destroy the dwarves and halflings, but that it got out of control.
  • The Church of the Earthstar decided to wipe out the Mystic Engines as people were not quarentining to remain on Gorel.
  • Depending on who you ask it was the god of Goblins, Dragons, or the Hidden Ones who did it.
