Clan Houses

The clan houses of Wano Dez seem to most more like mansions underground. To preserve the larger caverns for food production with crops and animals, the houses are built straight into the rock. So a small entrance may in fact be a huge complex. The clan houses are also designed with an extended family mind set and to maximize the use of cooking sources and fresh air.   The general layout of clan houses is based on a courtyard style design. There are three types of courts included in these designs; the entrance court, the meal court, and the living court. These courts are the semi-public areas of the complex. Entrance courts are often the largest, and typically build up and down, having multiple stories. Ringed around the entrance court are meeting rooms, storage rooms, and offices. The meal court could also be called a dining hall. As flameless heat sources are expensive to run but crucial for underground living, most meal prep is done by the clan instead of individually. This court is ringed by the kitchens, pantries, larders, and baths.   The last stye of court is the most likely to have multiples, the living court. Living courts are often divided generationally, two for the young single adults, one for the nursery and young families, and multiple for older families consisting of parents with older children and grandparents. It is important to note that clans are not all biologically related and a young person may desire a different profession and go to another clan's house. As such the turnover of the single adult courts tend to be high as the young decide where they will eventually live the remainder of their life. Living courts have the central multi-story area as a common room that is ringed by individual rooms, nurseries, leisure rooms, and family apartments.   Clans tend to operate many functions on an informal economy within their walls, and with formal economy without. This extended family structure has many implicit rules and codes of behavior that might seem odd outside a dwarfish environment. Depending on the businesses of the clan, it might have a workshop court or may only have a series of small workshops around the entrance court.

Architecture

Durable and permanent is the byword in Dwarvish architecture. A lot of stone work is used, especially arches, domes, pillars, statues, and freezes. Many rooms include stone worked built in shelves and alcoves for wardrobes. A second layer is often added to the rooms with rugs, tapestries, paint, and potted plants.
