Chapter Two: An Inciting Incident
General Summary
Wednesday, January 27th, 2162.
Boom.
That morning, as Raymond Barnes went to do repairs on the assembly line at the automobile portion of the glass production plant, a large explosion engulfed half of the building in flames in smoke. Raymond was too in shock to do anything as around him victims tried to escape the blast, some running out bloody and on fire.
James tried to keep his team in Human Resources calm. Wei tried to distract himself with protecting his work. Meanwhile, outside of the borders of Fuyao Beimei Scott Baros, known as Scoot to others, was woken up from his humble shelter with a gigantic boom. Getting up and quickly assessing the chaos starting in the country, Scott took this opportunity to sneak past the usual border patrol and enter the nation quietly. As he spoke to several of his usual contraband customers, he found out about the explosion in the plant. Many were worried that they had family and friends that may have died in the blast.
As emergency teams focused on fixing up victims and putting out the fire, Sebastian was called to meet with Tao Lin. He arrived at the same time as Xiaofeng Chung to receive his orders: interrogate and capture a list of people that Mr. Lin furiously scribbled onto a sheet and handed over to him.
James instead had been ordered to get his team in HR to let everyone know that unless told by Mr. Lin, they were all to stay home until work was officially ordered resumed. His office contacted officials and began working on signs to post throughout the small nation to make sure everyone would comply. As his team worked, James checked in with his stepfather to see if he knew anything. Unfortunately Chaoxiang was just as clueless as to the details as James was and could offer no help. James kept his eyes open and maintained calm in an office of employees furiously trying to work in order to get home and check on their loved ones.
Wei was recruited by Xiaofeng Chung to lead the investigation into the blast itself. In charge of gaining subordinates, Wei brought along friend and colleague Mitch Bock. Mitch reluctantly suggested that Vanessa Huggins from the aerospace glass technology department would be help as well despite his perception of her poor personality. Regardless, Wei recruited both and the three went to wait for the chaos to subdue in order to collect evidence from what remained of the explosion.
Raymond finally found himself at home, and took to his usual task of drinking away his feelings, keeping an eye on the window, as if there would be an answer arriving there at any moment.
Quickly, Sebastian approached Wade Bescript outside of Upper Deck Tavern and asked him to come along in order to help with the effort. When Wade resisted with suspicion, Sebastian responded with knocking Wade out and then carrying him back to the interrogation rooms that hid in the Administration offices. When Wade woke up, Sebastian tried to question him in his limited English. Wade just continued to scream at him to release him. Sebastain picked up Wade and restrained him to a chair before leaving the room.
Scott was able to get closer to the scene of the commotion, many of the authorities distracted as the clean up finished. He looked on as Sebastian then approached the wandering John Echols and Lily Bjorklund, looking for Wade in the crowd. Sebastian once again tried to convince the two to follow first, but as the both responded with suspicion, Sebastian finally knocked out John to take him with. In shock, Lily screamed and then ran away from the scene. As fellow Fuyoans looked on in confusion, Scott approached and tried to help Sebastian with carrying John. His attempt to disrupt Sebastian's tasks was unsuccessful, and he narrowly escaped the authorities and ran back on the trail of the screaming Lily.
Sebastian brought John back into the interrogation room, and continued to question Wade as he restrained the cameraman in another chair. With a machete conveniently stored in a side panel of the room's walls, Sebastian asks Wade one more time to tell the truth before cutting off John's pinky finger, waking him up with agonizing pain the process.
At the same time, Wei and his assembled team start their process in searching the gruesome remains of the assembly line. As Mitch gathered samples and Vanessa began charting the trajectory of the debris from the blast, Wei found a common kitchen timer in Mandarin from where the blast originated. He let Xiaofang know, who assumed this indicated that the blast must have been deliberate sabotage.
James finally completed all his tasks with Human Resources to come to his concerned mother Susan. They both traded information, Susan confessing that Hallie Kwong seemed extremely concerned with what Tao Lin may conclude after the blast. After a brief moment the home phone rang. James answered to hear that it was Lily asking for help, explaining that Sebastian had taken John and she wasn't sure where he was now. She pleaded for help to get out of Fuyao Beimei. James promised to and then asked his mother what options were available. With that, Susan made some calls.
Sebastian, satisfied that the screams from Wade and John were from general confusion, decided to let the go. He even handed John's finger back to him. The two rushed out of the building as Sebastian called up Xiaofeng to report his findings. Xiaofeng then suggested that Sebastian go to Wei to see how the investigation on the source of the bomb had progressed. Sebastian went straight away to speak to Wei, finding out about the Mandarin timer being part of the explosion. Sebastian shared that he had ruled out the Snippets team per his investigation, and then retired to his office to wait for more information.
Scott had stayed around the guest house he saw Lily rush to, and waited to see what else may occur. His patience rewarded him with the site of James meeting up John and Wade on the way back to the guest house, and all three rushing in. James heard about the cruel interrogation room situation and helped a frantic Wade calm down. As James lets them know he has a contact, he called his mother and updated her on how Sebastian had treated the Snippets crew. Susan, with great weight and concern from her voice, suggested to James that maybe would not be the right time to come home now. James responded in anger, asking if she was suggesting exile or if she just wanted him to be safe. Susan simply replied, "Both.". James took a moment to let his anger pass through him, and then promised his mother he would return. After a moment, there was a knock on the front door of the guest house.
Thanks to the quick testing by Mitch, Wei's team was able to discern that a fertilizer-based bomb was the source of the explosion in the plant. It apparently was placed thanks to the help of some crazy glue. Wei called Sebastian's office and relayed the information to him, where Sebastian confirmed that he felt this was from an internal threat.
After once again having to wrangle up the Snippet crew, James finally went to answer the front door only to see no one there, but hear a knock at the back. Tensely grasping a knife in his coat pocket, James opens the door to see a strange man with a bad mandarin come to the door. After a few words, Scott reveals himself as "Scoot", and asks if everyone is freaked out in the house because they set off the bomb. He offers to help them get out of the country undetected, but they would need to gather their things. As they finally make their way out of the house, pieces of paper fall the from sky, reading in mandarin: Do not believe Fuyaoan lies! They don't care for their factories! They don't care for their people! They caused all of this!
Somewhere in Fuyao Beimei, Raymond smiles. Maybe now everyone can see what he already knew.
