Chapter Fifteen: Pursuit
General Summary
Having been left with an abrupt ending for the meeting on April 11th, 2162, the Discontents decided they had to wait for Hasan O'Malley to reach out for a meeting. Their target was now developing a prototype for a their false proposal under the guise of employees of Fuyao Beimei. Somewhat dissatisfied with the uncertainty with when O'Malley will respond, they get their rest for the night.
The next morning Sebastian starts the discussion of who to trust when it comes to their contact, Cierra, and her story about the The Fighters of Greed being set up in the report by Neutral Party, Incorporated. James seems unconvinced by the group. Wei looked up some history on the group, finding out about how the members are set up in a web, and their long history. He also found out some specific history and articles regarding the activity of the FoG in the Chicago area.
In the midst of this research James received a call from Bodi Poppiti, who confirmed that the false funds to give to O'Malley were ready and they would just need several hours notice to set up. Bodi also reminded the Discontents that the hope was to get information on O'Malley's research as well as "neutralize" his efforts. Bodi clarified that the group was open to "neutralize" how they saw fit.
After the phone call, Wei and Raymond decide to look through their preferred sources to search on zombies, still intrigued by the information provided by The Truth Machine program Raymond heard. James decided it was a perfect day to be a tourist as they wait for O'Malley's call, and headed to the famous observation deck on the lakefront. Sebastian decided to sight see for potential meeting places around the downtown Chicago area. After over an hour, Sebastian had found some places that were open and public enough from his tactical point of view and started to head back to the hotel. That is when he observed a staggering man looking at him and approaching him at a crosswalk. After some maneuvering to confirm he was being followed, Sebastian called Raymond to coordinate a quick rendez-vous with Wei. Sebastian got down to Michigan Avenue with the staggering man following at a slow pace, allowing Raymond and Wei to get out of a taxi and follow the grungy man from behind.
Sebastian, now knowing his colleagues could witness the situation, finally confronted the man. The man just stopped and then turned away, only to be stopped by Raymond. After being asked twice why he was following Sebastian, the man again tried to step away. Sebastian went face to face with him and forced a handshake, noticing something that Wei had seen from a distance--an optical implant in one of his eyes, looking like a camera lens.
Sebastian decided to test to see if the man was still following him as he walked south on Michigan avenue, taking a round about away to hopefully meet up the man a couple city blocks away. As Wei and Raymond stay back to continue observation, the staggering man instead heads up to Millennium Park across the street into the botanical gardens. Raymond and Wei watch from a distance as he finds a bench and slumps over in place. Wei calls 911 and gets the EMTs. Sebastian called Raymond for an update on the location and hears what is happening. Sebastian then updates James on the situation. James, now distracted from the fantastic view of Lake Michigan he had been admiring, is upset that the authorities were called instead of taking the man in for questioning. James and Sebastian head over to the scene but by the time they catch up, the EMTs have already arrived and evaluated the man, putting him on a gurney and taking him in the ambulance. This is when the Discontents, whether for information or opportunity, all decide to give chase.
Despite the ambulance being noticeably faster and having a great head start, Wei was able to catch up to it's final location thanks to the unpredictability of city traffic. From across the emergency entrance Wei is able to observe that the formerly staggering man being sent in, with a strange protractor symbol and a number underneath it on a patch on the man's cargo pants.
Sebastian catches up with Wei in time, and calls James and Raymond who thanks to missteps and trips lost the ambulance halfway through their pursuit. All four end up meeting across the street from the hospital. James and Sebastian express their disappointment that they didn't just take the unconscious man, all theorizing that either O'Malley or someone else is trying to follow them. Raymond counters that since none of them are true medical professionals (regardless of James' recent minimal medical training) there was no guarantee they would be able to revive the man and receive information. Wei decides to share his knowledge of the symbol with the others. James recognized it as the symbol for the Freemasons, an organization his grandfather on his father's side used to belong to. With that information does a quick search of the Freemasons with the number on the patch, finding out it's associated with a chapter located in Springfield, Illinois. The Discontents consider what to do next with this information in the early afternoon of April 12th, 2162.
