Ironwood Armaments Lynx Mark 79 Rifle
The Lynx Mark 79, sometimes known by its military designation (PR-L79) is the 79th iteration of an iconic Ironwood design. The original Lynx Mark 1 was the first successful weapon to utilize caseless ammunition. At the time, the rifle's unique revolving design was an engineering necessity to offload excess heat and avoid igniting the entire magazine at once. In 2468, the newest model of this classic weapon was released. The Mark 79 can be classified as a precision rifle (or a designated marksman rifle if you live outside the Emberleaf Republic), meaning that it fires a full-power cartridge and is accurate at medium-to-long ranges. The mechanics of the weapon only tangentially resemble the original iterations. The Mark 79 utilises a magazine (which could technically be considered an en-bloc clip) which is cylindrical, but sits inside the weapon and feeds cartridges into the chamber. When the magazine runs dry it is ejected automatically out the side of the weapon. The Mark 79 is select-fire, unlike its predecessors and is capable of firing in semi-automatic or in two-round bursts.
Months after the weapon was released, the Lynx Mark 79 was adopted by several divisions of the Emberleaf Republic Armed Forces as a specialized precision rifle. The ELR's elite Veridian Regiment have been seen carrying these weapons in the field.
The Lynx Mark 79 comes with hologram sights, a diagnostic computer, HUD uplink, holographic round-counter, and a to-mounted magnetic accessory rail for optics. The weapon's electronics require a Micron-Class B cell, which must be replaced twice a month.
The military version of this weapon is made from the same polymer as the Ironwood Armaments Mark IAR-51 "Panther", but the civilian version sports the Ironwood Armaments signature flame birch furniture.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The weapon's "cylinder" is not actually a cylinder like that of a revolver's. It's a magazine that sits inside the weapon which rotates within its housing to feed rounds into the rifle's actual chamber. When the magazine is empty, the weapon pushes it out the side (you can choose between the left or right) so that a new one can be installed.
Significance
First developed in 2221, the Lynx rifle was the first weapon to reliably utilize caseless ammunition. It initially utilized a mechanical action in the first 2 iterations. In the 2240s, the Lynx Mark 3 was outfitted with a modified version of the EFCS from the Ironwood Compact Combat Rifle (CCR). Ironwood released new iterations of the Lynx every few years before discontinuing the line in 2398, making this the first Lynx rifle model to be released in 70 years.
