Georgie Palmer Character in The Connection | World Anvil

Georgie Rose Palmer

GEORGIE
GEORGIE
One of the four major characters in the worlds and stories of the Connection.

archetype

The Georgie archetype is the original no thoughts, head empty girl. Perceived originally as a terran magician with little to no magical ability, she finds her magical ability to transfer energy between life and death just in the knick of time and becomes a necromancer.

basics

Autistic and dyslexic, she struggled in school and ended up functionally illiterate. No worries, though, she's got a lot of help from the people she loves! Occasionally, she writes poetry despite these hurdles. The world passes through her mind in such intense ways that she cannot help but try and translate for the people around her. After all, her relationships are very important to her. Mac is her best friend (meatball, dog, etc.), Teresa is her beloved (role model, sister, etc.), and Astral is her spiritual leader.   Adopted into the fold of the Connection, she thrived in a place that respected her idiosyncracies without judgment and taught her new things to develop other skills, namely sewing and cooking.

fun fact

She blew up a horse one time.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Tall and lanky, she regularly has to look down at the people around her. She has fairly broad shoulders that are very good for resting heads on. With her food pickiness and activity tending to the garden, she is strong but lean.

Identifying Characteristics

If she doesn't have a vaguely heart-shaped birthmark or mole on her cheek, she'll draw one on herself.

Physical quirks

Her favorite stims are making chewing/spitty sounds, chirping, and flapping her wrists. They change in shape and form depending on her mood, but at her happiest she's chirping and flapping and at her worst she's chewing on her cheek so hard it bleeds.

Special abilities

Her magical powers are slow to mature. For a long time, she's unable to do a lot of magic on her own and depends on the spells of others to follow. Minor tricks here and there, but for the most part she is a lowly terran magician. Astral and Teresa are celestial magicians whose powers come from another world, but Georgie's magic is that of the earth and nothing else.   Some wild stuff happens, usually something dies, and her powers reveal themselves in their full glory: she's a necromancer. She can bring people back from the dead by balancing life forces. She can take the life forces from other creatures and put them into other bodies. For terran entities, their life force is green. For aliens, it is red.   Overall, she has very limited control over these powers and would rather not have them, but there comes a responsibility with it that she takes very seriously.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

She was born without intention. Her parents struggled when they found that the silent boy they'd bore transformed into a screaming handful. Amidst the crying and wailing, her mother struggled to find time to sleep or to take care of herself. To try and protect herself, her mother did horrible things. She would hit or shake the child, but the worst injury that her child sustained was the fruit of a cruel idea: placing her crib at the top of the stairs, bars down. When the fussy baby rolled and writhed, seeking comfort and never finding it, she rolled off and down the stairs.   After this incident, her father stepped in. He took full custody of her and cut off contact with her mom. From there, she grew up relatively safely, but unhappily. An ineffable quality of femininity plagued the child as she grew up, and her father needed fewer things to worry about. He focused on keeping her out of institutions which would happily accept another person who flapped her hands and couldn't talk. Eventually, she learned to talk, and amongst the first things she said were requests to try on dresses. That had to be stomped out.   Squashed under her father's heel, plagued by flashbacks of early cruelty, she wiggled away from the expectations assigned to her. She changed her name and became Georgie Rose, started wearing dresses exclusively, and insisted on being called "she." Her father tried hard to stamp it out, but finally he'd started taking to locking her out of the house.   That night, she sat on a bench and curled up, imagining the missing child reports for a child with a completely different name and appearance, until the sound of a truck rolled up beside her.   The man said "come here." Taking his hand and getting into the back of his car changed her life.

Gender Identity

Woman, demi-

Sexuality

Queer

Education

Her formal education is limited. The exact circumstances of her not being in school vary extensively from story to story, but they include her leaving voluntarily, being forced to drop out, or of never having attended school at all.   Diagnosed/recognized as autistic and dyslexic very early on, she struggled with school to varying degrees of finishing. In most stories, Georgie does not finish high school; in others, she never went to a public school at all. Because the First World takes place in the 1960s, there's an underlying threat of institutionalization because her family is sure that she cannot live independently.

Employment

Normally her job is "be very cute," but sometimes she works as the Connection's necromancer.

Mental Trauma

Her biggest trigger is being underestimated. In her normal families, which are always abusive and neglectful in some way, she is infantilized and lacks autonomy. Even in situations where her family is loving and accepting, there's always at least a period with a significant gap between her ability to express herself and their ability to figure that out.   Family is also usually very transphobic. She doesn't identify as trans until her teenage years because her gender dysphoria is fairly light and mostly confined to body hair, but her gender euphoria is activated at any given thing that feels womanly. Sometimes, her gender struggles stem from her sexuality woes: she likes girls, so why isn't she just straight? She doubts some of her identities because of this.

Personality Characteristics

Savvies & Ineptitudes

savvies

As part of her quest for self-sufficiency, either in the Connection or before she arrived, she developed important life skills.   Sewing her own clothes allows her to experiment with different shapes. Textures can be so bad that they cause meltdowns, so it's important that she's able to modify clothing to suit her needs. Preferring wacky outfits with mismatching colors and fabric, she loves to dress herself and her loves, too. One of the few things that she's ever memorized in her life are all of her girlfriend's measurements.   Cooking is another domain she has a lot of practice in. In simpler stories where she doesn't have a lot of money, she makes pan-fried bread a lot. When she gets access to some of the amazing fruits and vegetables that they grow in their gardens, she can really step her game up. Zucchini plagues their household with how fast and how much it grows, so she has gotten really good to finding as many ways to prepare it as possible: zucchini bread with butter is a house favorite.

ineptitudes

While scholatic pursuits are categorically an ineptitude of hers, it's not her only one.   The normal ebb and flow of conversation is outside of her reach. She's prone to wandering away or interrupting others. Whether she's able to make eye contact with her conversation partner is unpredictable.   This ineptitude is never treated as such by the other characters. It can be a learning curve to figure out the best way to communicate with her, but it's always rewarding.
