The Schism of The Elysion Imperium

1423 FA. - 1433 FA.

…For when Arelantar II was felled, the carrion began to circle. Ignoble sires to the felled Imperator would set their schemes in motion, and all Lorthwyn would burn as the Imperium fell before them…
— The Venerable Teague - A History of the Aelfaune people Vol.IX
For centuries, the unified Imperium of the Aelfaune reigned over the Island continent of Lorthwyn and beyond. At its high the Imperium's influence touched every corner of Evalaw, it's culture and invervations adopted amongst the other races, even its power was unrivalled by the venerable Fyllids and Dragon Lords themselves. However, such things are never meant to last, the hubris of the Imperium was something that could not endure. Some place it's downfall under divine intervention, others Inevitability. But for generations the cracks had begun to form, all it would require is the right moment to fracture it forever. This came in the event known as the Schism of the Elysion Imperium, which would mark the official divide and separation between the Aelfuane peoples that formed the Eylsion Imperium. This division was a long, arduous process that began in the aftermath of the upheaval of the Phoenix Wars. Boiling to a head on the death of the emperor, leaving no clear succession between dozens of children and grandchildren alike, thus lead to the great schism and collapse of the Imperium that would have massive repercussions for generations to come.   Relations between the province of Aurelion and the imposition of the Alcronian rule of the Imperium finally came to a head when the new emperor Arelantar II began to discuss dismantling the province and how best to divide it. Arl'lanithor had been re-established to its rightful seat as the imperial capital after a tenure during the Phoenix wars, it had been relocated to the city of Laeloria. It was during Arelantar II time in Laeloria, that he witnessed the corruption and religious fanaticism at the heart of Aurelion. Arelantar II begin dissolving the noble houses of Aurelion, seeing them as bygone reminders of the Elven kingdoms distant past. This however would be the Emperors undoing.   With the sudden, bloody murder of Arelantar II by an nameless assassin, the Alcronian dynasty broke down into an internal conflict over succession. The result would divide the house forever. One side was supported by Aurelion, the other back by Valnorians. The two houses that would form out of this divide would become the houses of Urithair and Selithlor. Ultimately seeing battlelines drawn throughout Lorthwyn as the imperium imploded into civil war.

A storm over Lorthwyn.

With the death of the Emperor, two claimants would emerge for the Imperial throne. The first was Selithlor Alcronian, third son of the Arelantar II whom would declare himself his father's rightful successor. Championed by his mother Sephirah Estirae Anaediath, an Aurelion noble woman, widow of the former Emperor and member of the sunburst sepulchre. It was Estirae who rallied Selithlors supporters in Aurelion and the southern provinces that sympathised with his cause to come together by evoking the wrongs of the past that had been done to them, pledging to put them right. The south of the Imperium had seen an harmonising of its Elven creed in Aurelion, and those from lands that had been subjugated in the early year of the Imperium under the umbrella. What had bound them together was the growing faith and reverence in the goddess of light Aushurie. Selithlor had embraced this new faith, further galvanising it to draw more to his cause. In the space of a few short days, dispensing with tradition Selithlor was crowned emperor of the Imperium upon the steps of the sunburst sepulchre in Aurelion by the Oracle of Aushurie.   There had long been a bitter enmity between the Northern provinces and the Island nation of Threylica toward Aurelion, the hope by many, including numerous of the southern provinces too was Arelantar II would dismantle the corrupt nobles controlled by the Sunburst Sepulchre that had taken root. With his assassination, suspicions pointed only to the Aurloriens. The investiture of Selithlor at the hands of the Oracle, The consequences would be far reaching as the other regions primarily Nhor in the north and Threylica to the far south rallied under the cause of Urithair Alcronian, first born heir of Arelantar II who refusing to acknowledge the authority of the Selithlor or Aurelion. To Urithair, it became painfully obvious that his brother was no more than a puppet of his stepmother Sephirah Estirae Anaediath, and the sunburst sepulchre, believing them responsible for his father's demise. Many of the Northern nobility and peoples felt slighted and abandoned, despite joining the coalition against Selithlors hold over the Imperium. They would instead crown their own king, Urithair Alcronian, declaring the establishment of the Kingdom of Tra'vanor, and renaming themselves to Valnorians.   Meanwhile to the very far south, in this Chaos the Kingdom of Amon'Isettii saw the chance to seize control of all its previous possession along the border regions of what was the Imperium. No longer bound by the pacts that were in place with the Imperium that were made under Arelantar I, they had all but dissolved into two new sovereign nations it held no agreements or treaties with.

Aftermath

In the end the Imperium would completely dissolve, fracturing back to pre-imperium states. Though Aurelion would continue to refer to itself as the Elysion Imperium and it’s people Elysions for the next few centuries. Southern Lorthwyn completely disintegrated. Empyria was the first notable southern states to re-emerge. It’s ancient lineage once again re-establish itself and took up their mantles of emperors of the mountain peaks once again. It would also see the demise of the imperial house Alcronian, dividing into two successor branches of House Selithlor and House Urithair.

Legacy

The Schism really is where we begin to see the appearance of the terminologies rise for the different Aelfaune creeds. This would began a long arduous decline in relations between the Aelfaune peoples that would come to its cataclysmic conclusion millennia later during the Sundering.

Location

The Battle of Branthius

Some name it the folly of Branthius, this important crossing into Aurelion would witness one of the bloodiest battles of the Schism. Valnorian forces retreating across the ford would be intercepted by Aurloriens forces, the battle raged for two hours before the Valnorian relief force that was due to rendezvous with the retreating army appeared from south and charged in, pincering the Aurloriens between the two forces. Casualties were high on both sides, but the Valnorians would emerge victorious but with such heavy losses were forced to withdraw back to the Valnorian border.

The three days of Tauredil fields.

Perhaps one of the most famous battles during the wars of the conflict. The three days of the Tauredil fields were a series of large scale battles between the entire raised hosts of Selithlor and Urithair across the hundred mile stretch of the Tauredil fields. Like many of the major battles of the schism there was never a clear victor during these engagements, for every victory each side gained, they would later suffer a defeat. What did emerge were a number of heroes and deeds of their valour that would be forever commemorated into song, ballet and masterpieces of Aelfaune art for centuries to come.

Scyllium ridge

The Battle of Scyllium ridge was a series of small scale skirmishes that took place over the course of four days. Amon'Isettii had pressed further than anticipated into the Imperium and now began to peck away at the foothills of Empyrea. Here the Elysion army, under the command of Marshall Merellien would engage the Isettii raiders and push them back into the Nimaerian peninsular.
