Valcour Dynasty

The state of Bourbon on Carolus is an oddity on its world. It is a creole state, inhabited by a myriad of different, intermingling peoples, and it is arguably the most powerful daughter confederate on the planet - save Halcyon of course. The State of Bourbon is ruled in perpetuity by the diverse Valcour family. Even if it wasn't in the state's founding charter, the Valcour family owns everything in the states modest borders. In a bizarre break with the rest of the Confederation, the Valcour go out of their way to bring up-and-comers of all kinds, be they Concordian, Huitzlian, Kiluru, or anything else in between. They've even adopted some Ursa into their ranks.

Assets

Aside from effectively owning the old state of Bourbon in its entirety, the Valcour have vast holdings across the Chord. They are heavily invested in the entertainment and hospitality industries across the western Chord. Bourbon is the home of the Confederation's culture industry, and the Valcour have very close ties to the Confederation's propaganda arm. Additionally, the Valcour have a strong presence in private security, though not like the Mulhollands or Bolivar. Theirs is considered the weakest navy out of the 6 dynasties, but their navy still rivals regional navies across the Chord. And besides, brute force has never been the Valcour way.

History

Once Carolus was liberated from the Ameselans, her surface was carved and divided by the victorious soldiers. Like the olden days of Concordia's inter-industrial era, Carolus found itself splintered into a million fiefs. Concordian warriors each found their parcel, and the state encouraged each landholder to develop their plot to the best of their ability. Louis Valcour was a middling member of Carolus's planter class. The third generation of planters in his family, he was born just in time to see the family fortunes turn for the worst. The Valcour lands were sickly and swampy, and the Valcour found their numbers dropping. In a great embarrassment after Louis's only son died, the man named his bastard son by a Kiluru-Huitzlian servant as his official heir. 5th century Carolus thought his family line was doomed. In a shocking twist of fate, the bastard son had an aptitude for planting, and reversed his family's fortune. Jefferson Valcour, as the new patriarch of his dynasty, soon rose alongside the greats of Carolus's high society. While they never really accepted him, they didn't have to. Turns out, the Chord is brimming with powerful and ambitious men and women that the rest of Carolus overlooked because of the families they were born into. Ever since the 5th century, the Valcour line has bolstered itself on those scorned geniuses of the galaxy. The rest of Carolus sees the Vacour as irresponsible, but in reality, they've simply found an untapped resource amidst a societal taboo.
