The Sovereign Free Cities of Caskadia
In 899, Five Cities claimed their independence from the Concordance Member State of Caskadia. Harken, Cork, Sabina, Iron City, and the orbital station Presidium, each declared that they were no long a part of the Concordance. Henceforth, they would be the Sovereign Free Cities of Caskadia.
But before all that, the Member State Caskadia was one of the most powerful states not only on Concordia, but in the entire Concordance. One company, Andropodon Solutions, based out of Sabina, had begun their experimentations into advanced neural networks in 874. Over the next decade, Andropodon would develop both the machinery and software to revolutionize the region's extraction industries. As Caskadia outlawed mountaintop removal mining, Andrpodon introduce a line of remote mining rigs, capable of boring deep into the earth. Soon, Andropodon developed fully autonomous mining rigs, and were diversifying into other industries as well. By the 890s, Caskadia was automating, going through major changes.
And blatantly breaking Concordance Law.
Once the Concordance turned its attention from Carolus and back towards its own home planet, the reprisal was swift. Bellum* was far away, but Caskadia was home. Machinery was dismantled, people put back into work, technology stolen. While the rest of the galaxy had lived with manual labor for centuries, the norms against automation faithfully observed, Caskadian citizens were not so willing to give up their privileges.
Protests turned to riots turned to hostility. Soon, the very machinery that brought the Concordance hammer was turned on them. Tools of industry became weapons of war. Autonomous soldiers supplemented rioters, and Harken declared itself an autonomous zone. When the other four cities came to Harken's aid, the Concordance struck back. Occupation forces flooded the Five Cities, taking out their rage and impotence towards the rest of the galaxy, and funneling it all towards the Sovereign citizens of Caskadia.
The Concordance denies it to this day. They say that decompression was the rioters' and the resistance fighters' faults. But Caskadians know that it was the Concordat Navy that fired on Presidium, destroying it from orbit, in 899. After the destruction of Presidium, war was declared by the Sovereign Free Cities of Caskadia.
Three years of war later, the SFCC were free to live as they please. Ever since, the SFCC has been a galactic powerhouse, developing a sizable stellar fleet of their own, and with an economy eclipsing the rest of their planet.
Technological Level
In terms of technology, Caskadia easily outranks the rest of the galaxy. With their mountainous borders protected by autonomous patrols, and their Stellar Carriers swarming with drone hordes, Caskadia punches far above their weight, militarily speaking. Caskadia can never win a total war with an entire planet, but fighting the rest of Concordia to a stalemate shows the disparity.
In their economy, too, Caskadia rules. While they cannot compete with the rest of Concordia, their per capita GDP has long outpaced that of the Concordance. Their manufacturing sector is the most advanced in the world, and their universities are second to none. While the SFCC has seen wild demographic changes since their automation, those that still remain live luxurious and rich lives, surrounded by every consumer good one could imagine.
