Magic of instruments

The magic of The Pit seems to be somewhat limited. Only the few chosen by The Tree in their dreams get to learn the Magic of the Songs. Only they can sing other Songs written down in the Book of Notes or they can write them down into it for others chosen like them to learn. Then, those few songs can be recorded on various devices for others to use. However, there seems to be no way to use magic that hasn't been passed down by The Tree before.   Or so it seems.

Evidence

In the last year, more and more evidence seems to point to the fact that the previous inhabitants of The Pit created various instruments which let them create various magical effects. There are statues, such as 'Victory against unknown beasts' that depicts soldiers wielding something that looks like bells, there are texts speaking of feats that seem impossible done by common people, and there are ruins that seem to be built or accessed by impossible means.

Why can't it be used

Even when trying to replicate the instruments depicted by texts and instruments, the current inhabitants of The Pit create only that, instruments. There seems to be something lacking, maybe something that needs to be done during the process of creation of the instruments, maybe the special way of playing them or magical words that activate them. Researchers and explorers try to find that missing piece of knowledge.

Mage Theory

There seems to be a theory that says that the instruments don't work because of the disappearance of The Mage, one of The Guardians of The Tree. Who spread that theory, and why they think that The Mage disappeared is unknown.
