Dimitris, the First Sailor of the Black Sea Character in The Call of The Tree | World Anvil

Dimitris, the First Sailor of the Black Sea

During the second year of the Awakening, a few scouting groups made a discovery on the lower Tree layers of The Pit, beyond where the shine of The Tree could reach.
A giant reservoir filled with the water so dark, one couldn't see even a few centimeters down.
They called it a Black Sea.   Because it was beyond the shine of the Tree, many people were scared that the Sea would be filled with vile beasts, ready to attack anyone who would set their sails on its waters.
Of course, there were people crazy enough to settle close to the waters, but no one even tried to fish in them.
At least until He showed up.
When he saw the sea for the first time, there was longing in his eyes, as if he has seen a childhood friend after the years of separation.
They called him Dimitris, the First Sailor of the Black Sea.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

His name was mentioned for the first time during the fourth year of Awakening when he settled in the industrial settlement at the coast of the Black Sea.
He showed up trying to hire men to build a ship.
The people there thought he was a madman, at least until he pulled out a bag of valuables.
Then they became more open to his goal.   Many people gathered to see the first cruise of his ship.
Some were there to see the ship itself, others wanted to see something as entertaining as the ship being destroyed by the beasts.
In the crowd, there was a woman fascinated by his dream and the love of the sea.
The cruise was not only successful, but there were also no problems even when the ship left the shallow.
And when the ship came back a few hours later, Dimitris showed the people the fish he caught.
This small success was the beginning of great changes.
With the news spreading, the coastal settlements started to grow.
Dimitris gathered a crew of loyal people with which he would explore the Black Sea and study its life.
They discovered many great ruins, some of which hiding the parts of the Book of Blueprints, species of creatures not seen anywhere else, and the unseen border of the influence of the Tree, beyond which everything that lives would crumble.
He also started a great naval trade between the coastal cities of the sea.   And at some point, he, his wife and his crew went on another cruise, but this time, they never came back.

Wealth & Financial state

Over the years, he gathered many treasures and bought many different types of ships.
Even before that, he was somehow in possession of the bag full of valuable items, which he used to buy his first ship.
He owned the collection of artifacts and trophies of the beasts he defeated.   When he disappeared, his wealth disappeared with him.
It was rumored that he hid most of his wealth somewhere on the sea, and the great treasure hunt began.
Especially since just one ship wouldn't be able to take all of his fortunes.

Physical condition

Life on the Sea has toughened him up.
Working on the ship and fighting with the beasts has built muscles on his whole body.
Some of the other sailors taught him how to fight both on the land and the sea.

Personality

He was a kind, caring, and creative man.
He often supported the inventions of various people either by providing them with money or the stuff they needed.

The hats

Dimitris always wore some kind of hat.
Whenever he was on land, he was wearing a top hat.
On the sea, his head was adorned by his trusty tricorn.
The weird thing is no one has ever seen him change them.
As soon as he took the first step on land, somehow he already had the top hat on, even though he wasn't wearing it a second ago.
How the hell does he do that?

Encounter with a Captain Fliegel

There is a story that tells about Dimitris' encounter with a legendary Captain Fliegel.
One day at the sea, one of Dimitris' men noticed how the water started bubbling near their ship.
Suddenly, another ship emerged from the black depths of the sea.
Captain Fliegel decided to attack them.
Apparently, according to that story, they fought so long, Fliegel decided to retreat out of respect towards Dimitris and his crew.
When they came back to the harbor, someone paid all their repair fees and bought them a round of beer in the tavern.
