Solathine Guard
The Solathine Guard are the primary military and law enforcement force of the Duchy of Solathi, and are responsible for the protection of Solathi and its surrounds.
The Guard are made up of the following units;
- Lightly armoured guards who maintain law and order throughout the city of Solathi. They mainly use light leathers, shortspears and bows.
- Heavily armoured soldiers, who actively defend the city and its surrounds from invasion or significant presence of bandits. They wear bronze scale and use longer xiphos swords and shields.
- The famous cassowary cavalry, who ride Calinan Cassowaries. They fill multiple roles, such as a highly mobile law enforcement force and a military cavalry should it be required. In addition to their cassowaries, they wear light leathers and use cavalry lances, javelins and/or light bows.
- A small coast guard consisting of a few war galleys and transport barges; nowhere near as formidable as the Avadian navy, but still effective at deterring raiders and transporting guards down the Galan River.
Structure
The Guard is led by the Captain-General, who commands the Guard and has the final say in any decisions regarding its operations. The Captain-General delegates authority to a number of captains, who lead a specific aspect/department of the guard. Captains then have several Lieutenants who report to them, who usually command a particular division of the Guard's department. Each Lieutenant, in turn, is reported to by a number of Sergeants, who lead the individual squads of Guardsmen.
Public Agenda
The public agenda of the Solathine Guard is the protection of the Duchy of Solathi, including Solathi and the areas surrounding it. It also exists to enforce the laws of the Duchy, and to enact the will of the Dux.
History
The Solathine Guard traces its roots back to the secession of Solathi from the City-State of Helik in 214 TE. Prior to Solathi's independence, the main law enforcement and military force in the colony were extensions of the Helikan Army itself, answerable directly to the Archon and the Helikan military command.
After Solathi's independence, the majority of the Helikan soldiers, either born in Solathi itself or trapped in the city after the Ashstorm, were repurposed at the command of Avilus Traia and bolstered by recruitment from the local populace. Their ultimate loyalty was now directed towards the Dux of Solathi, with a Captain-General appointed to oversee them. In the early years of the Guard, they still operated as a unit of clearly Helikan training and operation, but as time in the colony passed, they evolved and adapted to their home city.
In recent years, the Guard have begun to employ the assistance of foreign mercenaries to bolster their numbers again to help with the booming population and business in Solathi over the last several years. To that end they have contracted the Sons of Venderus, a cohort within the Sunburst Legion who extend their assistance to those beyond the reach of the Kalriv Empire. The legionaries still defer to the Guard. These have now been joined by the Kodiak Guard, the personal bodyguard of Eliksen of Kjoqvist, in light of the betrothal of Eliksen to the Dux's daughter Kara Avila.
