The Undying Order

The Undying Order is the official name of the government currently ruling Czellian Island. A feudal group vassals under a single warlord, the key element that makes Czellian's government different from the typical feudal societies across the world is the prevalence of undead and necromancy. While rare in the rest of the world, undead are commonplace in daily life across Czellian thanks to the order of necromancers that rule over it. Animated subjects are used for many aspects of work, from mining to basic service tasks to tireless soldiery. The workers of the Undying Order never tire, and through their efforts, their Necromancer masters grow ever more powerful.   The only requirement for acceptance into the elite on Czellian is a working understanding and practice of Necromancy. On the lowest echelon of society exists all non-necromancer, living creatures. Though they are citizens and have rights by law, higher-ups in society are legally free to kill and use the living as they see fit. These civilians are kept alive, however, because there are many skilled tasks required on the island that are not suitable for undead to preform, such as professional craftsmanship and farming.   Above non-necromancers are all “dependent undead”, or undead that animated by someone other then themselves. Though most undead on the island are simply mindless, those that possess sentience exist on a higher social echelon then the non-necromatic living.   Above them are Necromancers and “Independent Undead”, or undead that were animated under their own will, most notably Liches. Within this category exist the elite of Czellian, who run cities and maintain order in societies using their abilities to control undead. The elite on Czellian are cutthroat by nature, as all government positions are for life and the only means of promotion is the untimely death of one’s superiors. On the top of this elite is the Warlord Cosmo the Grey, who is said to be just as skilled a swordsman as he is a master necromancer.

Structure

Atop the elite exists the title of Warlord, currently occupied by Cosmo the Grey. The Warlord holds dominion over all legal matters, the military, taxes and foreign relations. These rulings are justified through sheer force alone, so the title's holder must be a powerful individual if he expects his rulings to be honored.   Below him are the lords of the major cities, called Archmancers, who regulate these cities main military forces and determine local laws, through the same justification-by-power that the Warlord above them uses.   Below Archmancers are Masters, who serve as fill-in "Archmancers" to minor settlements or manage specific districts within major ones. They usually animate most of the city watch and ensure local laws are adhered to. Below even them are simple Necromancers, whom animate undead laborers and who's influence usually doesn't extend out of their neighborhoods.

Public Agenda

The Order exists to provide a heaven for Necromancers and followers of the Malevolence Heresy, who are shunned and persecuted in many other parts of the world. They believe non-magic users are ignorant and lesser, and recently they've shown signs of transforming from an isolationist heaven to an expanding undead empire.

Assets

Available to the Undead Order are legions of undead warriors, most animated personally by the Warlord Cosmo himself. They are equipped with mass-produced weapons from the volcanic hematite found across the island and protect their necromantic rulers in castles of basalt.   The undead legions are constantly expanding, but the island is currently experiencing a shortage of bodies to animate.

Thanks! I'm creating this page as a reference for a Pathfinder Game I'm currently running, so I haven't decided how much detail I want to throw into the timeline's of every organization yet. I hadn't realized that other folks were going to be reading this as well, so I suppose I can return to the Undying Order to flesh out the history into a formal timeline once I've got the barebones of the rest of the region complete, if there is a call for it.

Thank you for your support! I'll consider returning to the Undying Order to do that later.
