The Imosi Lehlathi People
Napa Seloana stared at his target. A rather tall human woman, tall, in a formal blue dress. Stiffened collars and pointed up at the shoulders as if designed to protect her from the glare of the sun, from any direction.
Napa slid down from his his high perch, his tail swung around his window frame and down to the third floor, then the second and the first before touching ground. The tail swung itself around his waist, his back and shoulders like a shadow before he took off at a run, turning and side stepping through the crowd and stepping behind his target, he tapped his shoulder. She turned around sharply, her posture tense and uptight. Ge ducked under her gaze, reached into her purse, pulling out thin metal box, tossing behind his back. His tail uncoiling and catching it and snapping it open.
"Good Day Marm. I'm positive you've heard of me despite not knowing me right now."
"Excuse me, I do not have time."
"This will not take a moment. I am" He bowed, the tail tapping and tilting the box as the contents emptied and coiled around jewellery and two pieces of parchment.
"I am Auditor Napa Seloana."
This was far more than enough to freeze her. Her eyes wide, darting left and right to uncaring eyes. The tail dropped and her head turned, she saw nothing, giving up and bringing her eyes back to Napa, a full head shorter than her. Though, in that moment she might as well has been half its size.
"I-it is an honour."
"Trust me. It shouldn't be.He said waving it away. "I'm sure you know why I'm her."
"Yes"
The tail rose again, the first parchment raised and aimed at his eyes. The corner ofhis eye catching it but not him.
"Then my purpose is relevant because I am here to calm yours and even my nerves, you'd be surprised how often out of fear people have tried to to have me killed." He laughed, she didn't. The next parchment was lifted. "Honesty is the key to completing a fair audit. The crown does not care about mismatches as much as people think we do. We go as far as letting people skim off the top, make a plan of your own. It's the dishonesty of trying to hide once it's the dishonesty of trying to hide once it's noticed."
He knocked her over with a feather. The tail weighed up the coins found, squeezing and tightening before the coins slide back into the box. "Sooo..." His words slowed dramatically. "You should... never... be worried so long... as you tell... the whole.... truth, when... asked...."
She bristled at that point. "So are you asking me now?"
Napa raised his hands defensively. "Not at all. Questioning can only be formal and last exactly one week. I would like you to speak to council before that first question."
"I see," The box was popped back into her into her purse, a moment beforre her hand tightened around it, just missing his tail. "Then I guess I should start on that. Seeing as how my family depends on it."
"I understand," He said bowing and clearing a path.
