The Wreck of the Calendula

History

The Calendula was a Nymian transport ship lost off the shore of La Noscea at the end of the fifth era. On board was an assortment of crew including Nymian Marines and a group of researchers. Among the research group was a Mhach spy who had infiltrated the ranks of the researchers to discover what the Nymians were pursuing.   The initial course of the vessel seemed routine. As the days passed the plotted path began to become more erratic as noted by spies' journal. After several days it became apparent that the crew was attempting to distance themselves from a tail that was pursuing them. An Amdaporian sloop seemed to close the distance by the day. Realizing that they could not out run their hunters the captain of the Calendula charted a course for a nest of Octomammoths.   The Calendula has initially slowed their pace upon entering the breeding grounds of the kraken like creatures. With reckless vigor the Amdapoiran sloop raced into the nest. By the second day of pursuit within the dangerous waters the pursuing vessel had been taken and destroyed by the large creatures. Though initially relieved, the crew would find their reprieve short lived. A short time later the Calendula met a similar fate.   By the time the Garden had arrived, the vessel had settled in two pieces at the bottom of the ocean. Dive teams were sent to the sites while a distraction team remained at the surface to keep any Octomammoths occupied. After few hours of exploration the members of the Garden were able to locate the two halves and recover a number of artifacts. Items brought back included pottery, statues, preserved journals, and a key like object.

Geography

Sitting at the bottom of near one hundred falms of water, the vessel is mostly protected from the light of day. The waters that surround the vessel are warm and tropical. The area is teeming with life including fish, anemones, coral reefs, mollusks, and turtles. Beside the bow of the ship is a continental shelf that drops off to vastly deeper waters. There is a faint luminous glow surrounding the remnants of the vessel from orbs that appear to be the eggs of the Octomammoths.

Fauna & Flora

The bottom floor is comprised mostly of sandstone base with rocky outcrops. Numerous beds of coral make their home in the surrounding areas. In addition to the usual sea life of the costal areas of La Noscea there are a few creatures of extra note.   Tiger Sharks- These man sized creatures are swift and silent beneath the waves. Patrolling the area they seem at ease around the wrecks and depths of the ocean. Due to the infrequent contact with people these sharks do no have a fear of the creatures of man. Sighting smaller races, they will assume them to be prey and will often go after Lalafells. If they are able to grab a larger race such as a Miqo'te they would have little issue to carry them away as their prey bled death.   Octomammoths- Creatures that as larger than most ships, they have no issue easily grabbing and constricting their prey to death. Often there will be a queen of a colony. Being the largest creature she will attempt to drag down larger prey while the smaller creatures pick at the pieces. Many sailors have met unfortunate ends at the hands of this apex predator.   Preferring to remain in the depths off the continental shelf, the creatures return to shallower water to nest. During this time they are extremely aggressive and will often attack larger creatures and objects as they view them as threats to their off spring. Extreme caution should be taken when entering any nest during periods of breeding. While the creatures usually prefer to feast on whales and other large creatures, they will not hesitate to devour anything they can get their massive tendrils on.
