Divine Winter Character in The Bennorian Chronicles | World Anvil

Divine Winter

The Divine Winter is what brings the restful night. The peace of stillness and sleep. If Spring is waking, Summer is hard work, and Autumn is tidying up, then Winter is the rejuvenating rest one needs before beginning again. It is Divine Winter that collects the Dead and brings them into their Realm. The souls of the dead rest for a time before returning to the embrace of Divine Spring and being born anew.
Like the other Divines, Winter is not persofined by the people of Bennoria, simply recognized as the season of cold snow, rest, and death. Death is not feared by the Bennorians because they understand that, like the Divines Themselves, life is cyclical. A soul is born from Divine Spring and once their life is complete they pass into the Realm of Divine Winter. It is still aware and possesses all of it's memories and can not be reborn in such a state. The soul rests in the Divine Realm of Winter and slowly the memories and experiences fade, cleansing itself from it's past life. When the time is right the soul passes on to Divine Spring who allows the soul to be reborn into the world to begin the cycle of life again.

Festival of the Last Hunt marks the beginning of winter where the final preparations of Autumn are complete and everyone settles in to wait out the winter.

The Night of Rest and Rememberence, referred to as Midwinter, marks the apex of Winter and is a time where people come together to remember the dead.

Celebration of the New Dawn is when the world wakes from Winter's Rest and is reborn with the beginning of Spring and the new year.
