Astral Sickness Condition in The Astral Realms | World Anvil

Astral Sickness

Causes

Astral Sickness is the result of exposure to Astral Energy that exceeds the individual's threshold, a level that is determined by various factors. Such factors include whether or not they themselves are a mage, how long they've been exposed to tolerable levels of Astral Energy, and so on. Astral Sickness is, typically speaking, a condition that non-practitioners of magic experience when in the presence of a highly-experienced magician who is utilizing a Astral Energy for long periods of time. In these cases, the condition is short-term and will often result in little to no consequence, but if the quantity or quality of Astral Energy is too great, the condition may be more severe. However, even magicians themselves, if utilizing large amounts of Astral Energy, particularly amounts that dwarf the amount their body is accustomed to, may experience symptoms of Astral Sickness. Often times, these cases will also be short-term, barring those cases where the difference is drastic, the duration of exposure is long, or the frequency of exposure is high.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Astral Sickness come in both the physical and mental varieties. Symptoms frequently include unhealthy paleness and varicose veins, as well as nausea and vomiting. Some individuals experience flashes of hot and cold, or extreme headaches. Often times, immediately following the exposure, individuals may feel an increase in capability and functioning, such as a feeling of heightened or sharpened senses. This sensation is quickly followed by a drastic decrease in bodily functioning, most notably a sense of fatigue, exhaustion, and physical weakness. Other symptoms may include unordinary changes in mood, such as mood swings or consistently extreme moods. Emotions involved may vary, although symptoms appear to have a correlation to adrenaline and the fight-or-flight response.
