The Astral Knights

Warriors of Hope

The Astral Knights served to protect freedom and peace across all of the planes. They were an instrumental part of the rebellion, fighting alongside The Astral Guild, a group of wizards seeking to understand the nature of magic through astrology. The Astral Guild created a new system of magic use called astral wielding, which allowed the user to imbue weapons with powerful astral runes. Using this power, The Astral Knights defeated Boreas, the ice tyrant, and freed the planes from his dictatorial rule. They saw that the planes were too varied for any one government to rule, and allowed each plane to choose its own governmental system. The knights became peacekeepers, defending the innocent from those who would oppress them. However, need for the knights declined, and their rank slowly dwindled out. Their strongholds were lost, their weapons sealed away or destroyed, and very few astral wielders still remain. However, despite their disappearance, the legend of The Astral Knights lives on throughout the planes to this day.

History

The Astral Knights (then known as the Klarian Guard) were founded in 220 BA (Boreal Age) as the defenders of a small town in The Plane of Fields. They began taking up work outside of their town, protecting cities under attack, escorting important individuals, or destroying artifacts of dark magic. Becoming a member of the guard quickly became an extremely profitable job, as cities and local royalty payed highly for the services of trained warriors. The guard had few competitors, as no new groups could match their reach, reputation, or standard of expertise.
The Klarian Guard had always made clear their distaste for the Boreas's tyrannical rule, even being involved in several skirmishes with his occupiers* and several monstrous threats1 they believed to have originated from him. Because of this, as well as their large numbers and strong reputation, The Astral Guild recruited them as part of the rebellion. Working together these two organisations created astral wielding, and used it to give the guard's weapons, armor, and shield powerful magic. The Klarian guard transformed from an organization of knights for hire into a valiant and powerful symbol of peace. They became The Astral Knights.
The Guild and The Knights recruited several more powerful groups from across the planes, and built an army strong enough to challenge the mighty forces of Boreas. After several months of fighting, the rebellion finally reached Boreas's capital city in the original Plane of Mountains. The ensuing battle lasted for days, but in the end, the captain of the Astral Knights, whose name has been lost to history2, and Reqian Aprevei, the founder of The Astral Guild, killed Boreas, and commanded their army to victory.
After Boreas's defeat, The Astral Knights ensured centuries of peace throughout the plane. However, after so long with little conflict, the ranks of the Astral Knights began to thin, as the demand for peace keepers was drastically lessened. Eventually, the Astral Knights passed into legend, a symbol of hope from a time long passed. Mythical figures, the reality of whose existence became less important than the ideas they represent. But we know different. We were there when The Gallant One toppled the tyrant throne. We will never forget.   *A branch of the Boreal military dedicated to fear tactics, occupying major cities throughout the planes, and staging random and public executions, beatings, and cracking down on even the pettiest of crimes. This tactic was successful in deterring rebellions from begining or gaining traction.   1 Boreas often orchestrated targeted attacks using powerful wild creatures in order to destroy threats against him without the attacks being traced back to him.   2 He is know as The Gallant One. (Alternate titles: The Hero, The Astral Knight, The Golden Knight.)

Disbandment

"On this 44th day of lastleaf, in the 650th year of the Universal Planes*, the last remaining Astral Knights out of a desire to protect our individual interests as well as the interests of the planes, have agreed to the disbandment of our organization. No longer do we possess the numerical capability to fulfill our mission (that being to safeguard peace and justice) across the entirety of the appropriate territory (that being the enlightened planes). We are but men, shouldering the burden of gods, and we can no longer in good conscience offer the promise of our services to those who are beyond our reach. Therefore, we have sealed our capitals [bases], as to prevent any unforeseen abuse of the great power bestowed upon the members of our group, and are by this document renouncing our duties as the guardians of these wondrous planes." the official statement drafted by the at the time 10 remaining members of the Astral Knights.   *The era after that of Boreas's defeat was named "the Universal Era", as each Plane's government and power was prevented from expanding beyond their universe. In theory, each plane's power was limited to a universal level.
