Huriya

Huriya (ancient Arabic, lit. freedom) is the dominant religion practiced by humans on the Ariad, following the monotheistic tradition of the Abrahamic religions of Earth. Huriya was founded on the reinterpretation of key aspects of scripture as metaphorical prophecies of the humans' flight from Earth to the Ariad, which followers of Huriya consider to be the true promised land. The extent to which ancient scripture reflects modern history is debated. Recent centuries have seen an increase in the adoption of Huriya by elves, mostly in mixed-species lowland communities, although there are now several elfin Huriya sanctuaries in Tirakhan and Glasshaven.   Huriya is an extremely diverse religion encompassing many traditions, both inherited from Earth and adopted from other cultures on the Ariad. Predictably, disputes between the various denominations of Huriya are common. The two major denominations of Huriya, which have existed since the religion's foundation, are between Christian Huriya - believers that Jesus Christ is the true son of God - and Islamic Huriya - believers that Jesus Christ was one of many of God's prophets. Islamic Huriya is the more widespread of these denominations, with over two thirds of Huriya followers being of the Islamic tradition. A very small minority of Huriya followers practice a hybrid Hindu Huriya; Hinduism itself remains more common among humans.   Most denominations of Huriya practice one or more daily prayers - either in private or with family - and a service of communal prayer one or more times a week at a Huriya sanctuary. Prayers typically consist of recitations of scripture or poems documenting human history followed by invocations of gratitude or requests, typically for strength, resilience or direction, although concrete objects may be thanked or asked for as well.
