Supra-K One

Supra-K One is the first scientific outpost located entirely in the Supra. The 'K' stands for Kolakka, the word for the polar waters located just beyond the settlement. The Supra-K One is a large, open air, artificial tank complex that can host Merma. The Merma require dissolved oxygen to breathe and the atmosphere of their planet is not hospitable to their biological make-up.    The construction of the Supra-K One was a difficult talk unlike any other. Buoyancy in water makes verticle construction negligibly different from horizontal construction and most cities float openly in their prescribed water depth, though connected to each other for stability. But construction on the Supra removes buoyancy and makes structural integrity a challenge for traditional architecture. Because water is contained inside the Supra-K One, it also faces challenges of pressure from inside the structure.    Once the initial struggles of design were resolved, construction was its own problem. The Merma cannot move in the Supra as they naturally would (via swimming), so the complex was built remotely which required significant advancements in technology to do so. Dissolved oxygen and food were not so difficult to solve. The open air function of the tank allows the water to oxygenate as naturally as it does on the surface of Wateria and agricultural practices from the Kula have been adapted to feed the visiting scientists.    To reach the Supra-K One, a Merma must be enclosed in a pouch and shuttled via machinery. It is an expensive trip with moderate risk. Any technical difficulty could result in a pouch being stranded with its inhabitant outside of reach by any other Merma with a limited amount of dissolved oxygen.    Now, the Supra-K One is a settlement with only temporary residents that cycle in and out approximately every tide change. The so far relative success of Supra-K One has made many hopeful that further journeys and settlemtns into the Supra at lower, more radiated latitudes are feasible goals for the future.
