The Commission of the United Commonwealth

The State

The Minister comes, the Parliamentarian goes, but you and I, we'll be here for some decades still, now won't we?   And in those decades, government's will form, rise, do whatever it is they think they can get away with, and die sad deaths. And then you and I will pour out a drink for our departed overlords, then pour one out for ourselves so we may survive the post-fall mania that makes up a transition of power.   I have, in all my years, served 6 different Chief Ministers, and their rotating rosters of subordinates. Because governments come and governments go,   but the Commission lives on all the same.
— The Words of a Civil Servant
A legion many millions strong, an empire with reach and power beyond any sovereign's dreams , the Commission of the United Commonwealth forms the core of the central executive of the United Commonwealth government. With a history dating back to 20 A.S., a mere 2 decades after the formation of the United Commonwealth, it has served as the enduring, eternal, absolute face of United Commonwealth political might for generations.

The Seat of Power

At the top of the Commission totem pole sits the Chief Commissioner of the Commission of the United Commonwealth. They preside over the UC's daily government affairs, filling the role of a chief executive to the government, with significant freedom to act over personnel policy, promotion, appointments, as well as having final say on the proposing of legislation to the Parliament of the United Commonwealth.

Growing Strength

As mighty as it is now, the Commission was not always as influential as it currently is. Once a mere collection of minor offices, subject to the whims of national leaders far more than a central will, it took a century of reform and gradual accumulation of power for the Commission to ride to its present prominence.   It grew fastest and to the greatest extant under the 6 year long stewardship of the Strassmann and Min-Hee administrations. With Chief Minister Frederick Bademann recently provided with a significant majority, and Chief Commissioner Ryeo Min-Hee recently ascendant to the peak of the administrative ladder, the two were renowned and infamous for their combined conviction in the primacy of the United Commonwealth and its institutions over those of national governments, seeing them as far more efficient, effective, democratic, and incorruptible.   In this period, from 127 to 133 A.S., over 2 dozen new Directorates and Directorates General were created, vast powers were reallocated from national and regional authorities to Commonwealth one's, and most crucially, the Commission was granted the authority to collect and administer its own taxes and tax regime.   With access to such a key aspect of government authority, and now distinct from reliance on the allocated fundings of national governments, the Commission truly kicked off a meteoric climb in its political influence. From customs and immigration to the regulation of industry and labour, the Commission began replacing national ministries and departments in all things bureaucratic, increasingly centralising at a speed constrained by little more than the speed of communication and the wills of its leaders.
