Where's your character from? in The 10th Branch | World Anvil

Where's your character from?

Even though the appearances of Weirds and Wrongs have been a common occurrence throughout the human history, humanity itself managed to thrive. There are megacities, which cover giant pieces of all of the continents, each surrounded by walls protecting them from the Outside. And although there is not much contact between them, they slowly close gaps between each other. But no matter how far from each other they are, all of them have locations common for all of them.

Outside

Beyond the walls of megacities, there is the Outside. Vast expanses of both natural and unnatural areas, almost completely untouched by humans. Here, there is no protection from Wrongs and Weirds, no guards, and no food supplies. And yet some manage to live here. The landscape of the Outside is often warped and ever-changing. Something that was a desert a week ago could be a dense forest now, and the people of the Outside learned to adapt to those changes.

If you're from the Outside

Maybe you lived in a small village hidden well enough to never be found by any Weird or Wrong. Maybe you and your family or clan had to constantly move, living a nomadic life. Maybe you ran away your whole life, trying to avoid something that found pleasure in hunting you.
How did you enter the city? Were you able to sneak in, either through the gate or one of the holes made by the Wrongs? Maybe you managed to meet one of the 10th Branch Squads working beyond the walls and they decided to recruit you? Maybe a Wrong you encountered warped you in the middle of a megacity?

Suburbs

While just being inside of the walls of the megacity drastically lowers the chance of encountering the Wrong or Weird, the Suburbs have their own share of dangers. Gangs, cults, lack of food, the hunts, or hostile weather conditions are just some of the things an average dweller of the Suburbs has to learn to survive.
The landscape of the Suburbs varies a lot. Sometimes it is a maze made out of tents condensed around the only source of food and water in the area. Sometimes it is an almost normal neighborhood in either a rural or urban landscape.

If you're from the Suburbs

Maybe you were a member of one of the gangs since your childhood. Fighting in their name ever since you can remember.
Maybe you had to fight for a very limited supply of food. Or you learned how to survive in a very hostile environment.
So why did you join the 10th Branch? Maybe you wanted to test yourself. Or to get more power. Maybe you had enough of fighting against other humans. Maybe you wanted to make sure you won't be hungry anymore. Maybe you wanted to see more of the world. Or maybe you try to hide from some powerful people you got bad side on.

Blocks

Blocks are giant, multi-level structures of apartments, stores, production lines, farms, power plants, and even waste disposal facilities. One could call them cities or villages. They are almost completely self-sustained, usually needing the corporation's help with only one of the aspects of their functioning (often either security, food supply, or energy supply). While they are one of the most secure structures in the megacities, the Wrongs and Weirds still can show up here sometimes, and even without the risk of danger coming from them, not all the blocks are governed the same way.

If you're from the Blocks

Maybe you never had to fear if you will eat the next meal. Or maybe you had to fight for your place in line so you will get anything at all. Maybe only members of a certain group, cult, or gang had the access to some of the necessities. Maybe there were periods of time where you had to survive without one of the basic necessities. Or maybe there was no struggle at all.
Why did you join the 10th Branch? Was it for money? Out of boredom? Was your block attacked or wiped by a Wrong that suddenly showed up? Maybe you wanted to escape?

Corporation

Corporations control and own everything, and that means humans too. So it's no wonder that someone can be born and live their whole life belonging to a corporation. While the employers of the smaller corporations usually have their own accommodations, the big corporations are very similar to blocks, where they are almost completely self-sufficient, merging the workplace and living areas for the maximum efficiency of their workers.,

If you belong to Corporation

Maybe you started working there by yourself. Maybe you have to pay off the debt your parents didn't manage to. Maybe it was your own debt.
So why did you transfer to the 10th Branch?
Did you already have enough of sitting behind the computer? Has your corporation found some kind of talent in you and decided to transfer you here? Have you annoyed the wrong person?
