The journal of Archaeologist Isabel Lucas.
Prompt 23: A travel log or other document associated with discovery.
The journal of Archaeologist Isabel Lucas.
Isabel Lucas is an archaeologist from the Library of Chaus. She is in her mid-twenties, athletic, approximately 5 foot 8 inches tall with long curly black hair and olive skin. She is beautiful if sometimes unkempt and bookishly dressed. She has been assigned to work with the Order of the Portals to study the known portal gates and examine their construction, origins and any writings or hieroglyphs left by the makers of the portals. Whilst her formal work is collated and sent to the Library under the guard of the Order of the Portals and stored in the most secure area of the library, she carries a journal of her working notes, diagrams and working theories about the discoveries she has made on the gates.
The journal is a small leather-bound book of rough parchment paper, roughly 200 pages in all. It is filled with notes, etchings, charcoal rubbings, diagrams, descriptions of artifacts, locations and the gates themselves as well as Isabel's notes and theories on the gates and some of the strange symbols she has discovered at each site. There are also large amounts of loose note papers, rubbing papers, and sketches that are shoved into the pages of the notebook alongside the notes they relate to, which causes the book to bulge beyond the lines of its original binding, thus Isabel keeps the journal bound with a blue ribbon around the middle of the book. The book is rarely away from her side as she is stopping to write or draw in it constantly on the dig sites and cross-referencing the notes when compiling her accounts of the findings at night. When she sleeps she keeps the book close at hand by her bedside with a pencil ready in case she has a flash of inspiration in the night.
Isabel’s work was first commissioned by the Order of the Portal a year ago, due to unusual enemy activity at and around the gates. Never before have the dark lord's forces paid any attention to the gates, preferring to create their portals to the various layers of hell and ignoring the existence of the portal gates. Now, there have been multiple attacks on gate location., all defeated, but increasing in their strength and with different tactics each time. Sightings of monsters have increased around the gate locations and recently members of the order have started going missing. The Grand marshal rightly believes the dark lord is plotting to do something nefarious with the gates but does not yet suspect the plan is to find and destroy the great gate. In hopes of discovering and foiling the Dark lord’s plan, the Grand Marshal has Isabel investigating the gates for clues to what the Dark Lord is after. Unwittingly he has given the dark lord a far easier path to his goal. Isabel’s journal contains nearly all the information the Dark lord can gain from the gates and if she or the journal were to fall into enemy hands it could spell disaster for the entirety of Thar’kor.
